Pundit recalls Wrexham game that was one of the ‘biggest cup shocks ever’, way before Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac

Wrexham are now a globally-known football club thanks to owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac. But they’ve long been causing upsets in the game.

There seems to be no stopping Wrexham on their route to the Premier League, with Phil Parkinson’s side steadily putting points on the board in the Championship.

Last time out in the league, Wrexham beat Norwich City 3-2 to claim their second win of the campaign and move up into 16th place of the Championship table.

And the Dragons are making good progress in the Carabao Cup, too. On Tuesday night Wrexham beat Reading in the third round and are now in the fourth round for the first time since 1978.

The Carabao Cup fourth round draw takes place on Wednesday night and we could yet see Wrexham play one of the Premier League’s big-hitters; potentially Arsenal who take on Mo Faal’s Port Vale on Wednesday night.

Alan Brazil remembers Wrexham’s iconic 1992 win vs Arsenal

The fourth round draw will commence once the Arsenal and Port Vale game is concluded. And if Wrexham draw Arsenal then Dragons fans will surely hope for a repeat of that 1991/91 FA Cup game between the two teams at the Racecourse, which Wrexham won 2-1 thanks to goals from Mickey Thomas and Stephen Watkin.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Wednesday morning, pundit Alan Brazil recalled the game and labelled it as one of the biggest upsets in cup history.

He said ahead of the Arsenal and Port Vale clash at Vale Park: “Some Gunners fans who are old enough to remember, may still have sleepless nights from way back in 1992 when fourth division side Wrexham beat the Arsenal at the Racecourse in one of the biggest cup shocks ever.”

When was the last time Wrexham played Arsenal, Liverpool or Man City?

The big-hitters left in the Carabao Cup include Chelsea and Liverpool, whilst Man City, Spurs, Arsenal and Newcastle United all play lower-level opposition on Wednesday night.

That 1992 Arsenal game was only one of two games between Wrexham and the Gunners, the other being an Arsenal win at the Racecourse back in 1978.

Meanwhile, Wrexham have played three games against Man City and are winless against the Premier League giants, losing two with the last being a 1-0 Man City win at the Racecourse back in the old Division 2 in 1998.

It’s a largely similar story against Liverpool whom Wrexham have played 19 time games, winning six and losing 11. But the last time they met was way back in 1978 when Liverpool won 3-1 in North Wales.
