A ‘quality’ player linked with Wrexham in January has just announced his release from a Championship club.
Hollywood-owned Wrexham are known for their outrageous links to players in the transfer window.
Only last week Humphrey Ker refused to rule out a move for Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy while naming Nottingham Forest’s Neco Williams as his ‘dream’ signing.
The ambition shown by the club is facilitated by the intentions of Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, who aspire to do whatever it takes to win promotion to the second tier.
Those aims will be supplemented by some terrific business in the transfer window, as Wrexham aim to bolster their squad with quality from the Premier League and the Championship.
It has now emerged a player they once were linked with from the Championship has just announced his release from the club.
Wrexham target Lee Gregory announces Sheffield Wednesday departure
Wrexham were linked with signing Sheffield Wednesday striker Lee Gregory in the January transfer window.
The 35-year-old striker was frozen out of Danny Rohl’s plans and was surplus to requirements as the Reds attempted to bolster their forward line.
Parkinson ended up acquiring Jack Marriott from League One side Fleetwood Town on deadline day while Gregory remained in S6.
Having played just a single minute of Championship football since October, the end of Gregory’s Wednesday career hasn’t planned out as he would have liked, although that hasn’t stopped him from penning a heartfelt message after announcing his departure.
Waving goodbye to his three-year stint at Hillsborough, he wrote via X:
The “quality” Gregory is now a free agent after leaving Wednesday, and while his age may put some clubs off, a League One will surely be tempted to snap him up.
Should Wrexham launch a move for Lee Gregory?
After being linked to the former Derby striker previously, it seems viable to snap him up on a free transfer, but that is no longer the case.
Despite hitting double figures for goals in his last two seasons in League One, signing Gregory isn’t a priority option, especially given how many strikers they currently have.

Wrexham have six strikers currently on their books, including Paul Mullin, Ollie Palmer, Sam Dalby, Jack Marriott, Jake Bickerstaff and Steven Fletcher.
The Reds just gave Fletcher, 37, a new contract at the club, so they are currently bloated with options.
There is no doubt that Gregory would score goals in the third tier however, if McElhenney and Reynolds were to look for a new number nine, surely it would be someone for the long term.
With that said, Wrexham don’t appear to be fazed about acquiring older players having signed James McClean and Fletcher last summer, so perhaps they’ll be tempted by the former Millwall star.
