Wrexham secured a 3-1 victory over Grimsby Town on Saturday with one player earning praise for his performance in Lincolnshire.
The race for promotion out of League Two is heating up. Mansfield dropped points at home to Colchester United while Stockport thrashed promotion rivals MK Dons 5-0 and did Wrexham a favour.
While it was a good weekend for Phil Parkinson‘s men as results went their way, the Reds took charge of their destiny by beating Grimsby Town 3-1.
Despite dropping points against Harrogate Town and Tranmere Rovers, Wrexham were rampant against the Mariners.
The hosts couldn’t live with the visitors’ speed in transition as Andy Cannon scored a brilliant brace and Paul Mullin smashed home a volley on his weaker left foot.
Cannon stole the headlines with his display by scoring twice as Rob McElhenney was blown away by his performance, but he wasn’t the only one to share that narrative.

Andy Cannon hailed for ‘beautiful’ moment in Wrexham win
Cannon is known for his workhorse-like displays in midfield rather than his goalscoring touch, however, he was the unlikeliest of heroes against Grimsby by grabbing two goals.
The 28-year-old scored the opener inside five minutes with a powerful drive and finished off a fine counter-attacking move with a devastating finish, enabled by the twinkle toes of Mullin to evade a few challenges.
Mullin’s incredible footwork on the halfway line may have opened up the chance of a counter, but Cannon’s finish was equally breathtaking and has drawn several plaudits.
Speaking on the Not The Top 20 podcast, Ali Maxwell was blown away by Cannon’s quality and hailed him for such a “beautiful” finish. He said: “It’s a beautiful beautiful finish from Cannon, such quality and power in the strike on the counterattack and Paul Mullin doing similar with the volley over his shoulder with his weaker left foot to make it 3-0 after 40 minutes.”
Andy Cannon is too good for League Two
With the money pumped into the club by McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, it is no wonder Wrexham have several players who are far too good for this level.
Mullin can play in a higher division having attracted interest from Championship clubs in the past while the likes of James McClean, Arthur Okonkwo and Elliot Lee can all play in the third tier.
Cannon, who was initially signed from Championship side Hull City in December 2022, is another who has vast experience playing higher up.
During his years at Rochdale and Portsmouth, the Englishman made 162 appearances in League One with Hull signing him on the back of his performances at Pompey.
Although he didn’t possess enough quality to play in the second tier with the Tigers, he will make a seamless transition into the third tier if Wrexham get promoted.
