Wrexham’s unbeaten start to the League One season has been brought to a crashing halt after losing 3-1 at Birmingham City on Monday night.
It’s not often that Sky Sports have an hour-long build up for a League One game.
That was the case on Monday night though as Wrexham travelled to take on Birmingham City at St. Andrew’s.
Both sides have shown major ambition in the transfer market, though Birmingham have certainly splashed more cash than Wrexham.
It was Wrexham who took the lead though as Jack Marriott pounced early on with Birmingham failing to deal with a corner into the box.
That was just about as good as it got though as Jay Stansfield bagged a brace and Tomoki Iwata scored from range to seal a 3-1 win for Birmingham.

Rob McElhenney sends message to Wrexham fans
Wrexham just didn’t quite have enough on the night and the better side certainly won.
Phil Parkinson was disappointed with how Wrexham responded after going a goal down but it’s all part of the learning curve at this level.
In truth, few League One sides in history have been as stacked as Birmingham across the pitch.
This was always going to be a tough game and Rob McElhenney has now sent a message to the travelling Wrexham fans.
The game had celebrities at the heart of it with Wrexham owners McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds coming up against NFL legend Tom Brady on the Birmingham side.
Brady sent messages to McElhenney, David Beckham turned up at the game, it all just added in to the hype around the fixture.
McElhenney has now taken to social media to send a message to Wrexham fans, noting that the result wasn’t quite what Wrexham were seeking.
McElhenney was blown away by the Wrexham support though, simply stating ‘wow’ alongside three explosive emojis.
The Wrexham co-owner added a thank you to both Brady and Birmingham before looking forward to the next meeting between the two sides, coming up in January.
McElhenney can be proud of Wrexham
The result didn’t go Wrexham’s way and there was a noticeable gulf in quality on the night.
That is no great shame for Wrexham though, especially having rapidly advanced from the National League to League One.
Birmingham have spent their time in the Premier League and Championship over the last 20 years and are simply ahead of Wrexham on and off the pitch.
Wrexham still performed admirably though and the mere notion of a Birmingham v Wrexham league game sounded crazy just five years ago.
It’s a reality now and Wrexham landed a few punches but just couldn’t sustain the fight against a side who spent more than most Championship clubs over the summer.
McElhenney and co can be proud of what they have built at Wrexham and who knows, maybe the gap will be closed by the time Birmingham visit in 2025.
