Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney says he is not expecting a warm welcome when the National League champions play Philadelphia Union II during their pre-season tour of the US.

The Red Dragons have announced that they will be facing Philadelphia Union II, a team of rising stars that compete in the MLS Next Pro league, in the fourth and final match of their upcoming pre-season tour.

Following the announcement that Wrexham will be playing the young Philadelphia side, co-owner Rob McElhenney took to Twitter in a look ahead to the match.

“I will most certainly be booed,” he joked. “That’s a badge of honor in Philly. I’m just glad it won’t be snowing.”

McElhenney, who created the long-running sitcom It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, was born and raised in the Pennsylvania city and is also an ardent fan of the Philadelphia Eagles NFL team.

Wrexham’s US Tour in full

Wrexham’s tour of the US will be a far cry from the team’s pre-season plans in years gone by as they will be facing Premier League opposition and US-based opponents.

The Welsh side will begin their tour on the east coast with a match against Chelsea before traveling over to the west coast to face LA Galaxy II and Manchester United.

Wrexham’s final fixture will see them return to the east coast for the ‘Rob McElhenney derby’ against Philadelphia Union II.
