Phil Parkinson asked Rob McElhenney to be a ‘fresh’ voice to the Wrexham players

Speaking on the final episode of the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary series, McElhenney revealed that it was the Wrexham boss that asked him to give him a pep talk before the game with Charlton.

McElhenney had already given a talk before the Blackpool game on Easter Monday and his words had a positive effect as James McClean and Ollie Rathbone struck to secure a vital three points.

The owner was then asked to repeat the feat before the promotion decider with Charlton and the reason behind it has now been revealed.

McElhenney explained: “Phil asked me if I would just give a little pep talk to the players who just needed to hear something fresh. He was like look they are listening to me and Steve Parkin all year long and they just need your fresh perspective.”

His words worked once again as McElhenney told the Wrexham players to play like kids and enjoy the game, they did just that with a 3-0 victory to earn League One promotion.

Wrexham owners now need to support Phil Parkinson with transfers

Wrexham’s owners promised to be ‘aggressive’ in the transfer window but so far only Ryan Hardie has walked through the door at the Racecourse Ground.

It is still early days however, Parkinson will want to have any potential new recruits in as early as possible to get them used to their new surroundings.

Wrexham are off to Australia on their pre-season tour and that would be an ideal time for new signings to bed into the group and become accustomed to the style of play.

Wrexham are interested in a number of free agents, including Tom Lawrence and Craig Dawson but fans will also feel that their club record transfer of Sam Smith will need to be broken this summer.
