Wrexham moved into second place in the League One table after a massively important win over promotion rivals Wycombe Wanderers, but football ultimately took a backseat on the day.

The fight for promotion between Wrexham and Wycombe has been a thrilling one, and there’s still plenty of time for the battle to take more twists and turns.

But, the Red Dragons hold a huge advantage now after Sam Smith’s goal secured a 1-0 win at Adams Park on Saturday afternoon.

Smith was praised for the ‘threat’ he posed in the game, and Wrexham fans came away from the clash feeling positive about their chances of promotion once more.

However, there were more important matters for everyone to deal with on the day, after a medical incident halted the game.

Wycombe prove they’re a ‘class act’ in dealing with medical incident

With 76 minutes and 25 seconds on the clock, the play was paused when a Wrexham supporter was the subject of a medical emergency in the stands.

The game got back underway later in the afternoon, with Wycombe Wanderers’ official Twitter/X account posting: “The medical incident has been resolved and the supporter is on the way to hospital with our very best wishes.”

After the game, plenty of Wycombe fans took to social media to share their support for the Wrexham fan, and proved just how much of a ‘class act’ the Chairboys are.

One supporter wrote: “Fair play to the 1800 Wrexham fans this afternoon. Plenty of noise, dealt with a terrible situation with class, in the end rewarded with the points. I want to dislike them but I can’t after that. Hats off.”

Another added, “When things like this happen football doesn’t matter. The welfare of that person is the main thing.”

Meanwhile, Wrexham supporters showed their appreciation for the way the situation was handled. The RobRyanRed podcast replied, “Respect to your and your players when they came back out.”

Another Red Dragons’ fan said: “The scenes at the end of the game! Fans celebrating the win, embracing the stewards and medical staff who helped the unwell fan. Thought Wycombe players and fans did themselves proud today. Quality club!”

Other Wrexham fans said, “Wycombe are a class act,” admitted they “Could not have more respect for Wycombe and their fans, stewards and staff after today,” and even added, “I’ve had healthy respect for Wycombe all season which was doubled today. I want the auto for Wrexham but hope your team wins the playoffs.”

Even Rob McElhenney shared a message of support for the fan who was rushed to hospital, and praised Wycombe’s staff for how they dealt with everything.

Wrexham win has to be catalyst for one last push

With that matter seemingly all resolved for the better, the Wrexham squad and management team will have to get their focus firmly back on the football and look ahead to that crucial run-in.

All eyes will be on Wycombe’s clash with Rotherham United on Tuesday night, but in many ways, this promotion race is now in Wrexham’s hands.

Wycombe will be reeling after that defeat, and though they have the superior goal difference, it’s not impossible to imagine that they could crumble in the final League One games this season.

Wrexham, meanwhile, will be full of confidence and spirit. That upcoming fixture against Stockport at the Racecourse Ground will be so important, and will not be easy by any means, but the Red Dragons cannot fear anyone now.
