Wrexham’s unbeaten start to the League One season came to an end on Monday night, losing 3-1 away at Birmingham City.

Phil Parkinson took his side to St Andrew’s on Monday night as Wrexham faced a huge clash against Birmingham City.

Fans have been looking forward to this one for weeks and it was all about the football rather than the celebrities involved.

Forget Tom Brady, forget David Beckham, the action on the pitch is all that really mattered as Wrexham just came up short.

Jack Marriott fired Wrexham in front early on but that dream start sadly faded away.

Jay Stansfield’s brace and a Tomoki Iwata goal handed Birmingham a 3-1 win as Wrexham’s run of four clean sheets in a row came to an end.

Rob McElhenney sends message to Birmingham City

This game had so much furore around it, largely due to the celebrities involved around the game.

Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney flew into watch the game but witnessed a tough defeat at St. Andrew’s.

Ryan Reynolds was not in attendance but McElhenney was seen video calling Reynolds from the stands.

Sky Sports certainly leaned into it with an hour of build-up and more shots of Beckham in the stands than anybody could have reasonably wanted.

McElhenney has now sent a message to Birmingham following Monday’s difficult loss against the big-spending Blues.

McElhenney noted that Birmingham have a ‘great side’ and thanked them for their hospitality at St. Andrew’s.

The ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ star added that Birmingham’s fans and staff were ‘class’ and looked ahead to the return fixture in January, vowing that Wrexham will be ready for battle.

Wrexham shouldn’t be too downbeat

Yes, it’s a blow that Wrexham’s unbeaten run is over but this was always likely to be the most difficult game of the season.

Wrexham started so well and not only scored but controlled the game up until Stansfield found a Birmingham leveller.

Wrexham were rocked from that point on and just couldn’t wrestle back control of the game.

Birmingham were able to boast South Korean international Park Seung-ho and Japanese international Tomoki Iwata in midfield.

They ran the show for the Blues and just showed that money can buy quality far beyond League One level.

Wrexham aren’t quite at Birmingham’s level just yet but this club is on its own path and can’t be compared to Birmingham’s journey.

Wrexham will look to continue building and fans will be confident of heading in the right direction under McElhenney and Reynolds with Monday’s defeat hopefully just a blip.
