Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac’s impact at Wrexham has not just been felt on the football pitch.

Rob Mac was inspired by Sunderland to buy a football team after watching their Netflix documentary.

Together, he and Ryan Reynolds purchased Wrexham for £2m in February 2021 after exploring various options.

Now, four and a half years on, the Red Dragons are thriving, with both the football team and town benefiting.

Wrexham’s £191m boost

On the football front, Wrexham are expecting £50m in revenue during the 2025/26 Championship season.

That would be another club record, after a turnover of £27m was announced earlier this year from their one season in League Two.

A key part of the Dragons’ financial success has come from commercial revenue, brought about by the profile of their owners and the success of Welcome to Wrexham.

The documentary series has brought a worldwide audience to the club, with fans around the world visiting the Racecourse Ground.

This newfound interest has had a positive impact on the town’s economy, as Business News Wales has shown.

Citing the annual STEAM Data, it is reported that £191m was brought into the Wrexham economy by tourism in 2024.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac praised for Wrexham success

Lead Member for the Economy at Wrexham County Borough Council, Cllr Nigel Williams, has praised Wrexham AFC for their contributions, highlighting Rob and Ryan’s documentary.

He said: “The positive 2024 tourism data is yet again a testament to the hard work and commitment of our hospitality businesses and resilience to continue providing a brilliant service, despite the challenges facing the sector.

“Naturally, Wrexham has benefited more from overseas visitors in recent years thanks to the exposure afforded by the documentary and the success of Wrexham AFC on the pitch.

“Alongside this, we have been working hard with partners at Visit Wales and This is Wrecsam to grow our visitor markets by liaising closely with travel operators and taking the opportunity to showcase many of the wider attractions of Wrexham County that we possess.”

Welcome to Wrexham Season 5 has begun filming and is expected to air after the current Championship campaign finishes.
