Wrexham are set to compete in their first Championship season under Phil Parkinson, but his long-term future has been cast into doubt.

The Red Dragons will kick off their first-ever campaign in the rebranded Championship in just over two weeks.

Wrexham face Southampton in their opening outing, who were relegated from the Premier League in 2024/25.

The Welsh outfit have had a busy summer transfer window so far in preparation for life back in the second tier for the first time since the 1980s, including signing Josh Windass after his Sheffield Wednesday exit.

Now, ahead of the new season, the future of long-term manager Phil Parkinson has been cast into doubt by one pundit.

Wrexham sacking Phil Parkinson in 2025/26 mooted

Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac appointed Parkinson as manager in the summer of 2021.

His first season in Wales saw the Dragons miss out on promotion from the National League after losing in the play-offs.

Parkinson has since guided Wrexham to three successive promotions — a record for clubs starting in the fifth tier or higher.

But EFL pundit Ryan Dilks has now suggested that the manager will be sacked in 2025/26, pointing toward his previous record in the second tier and the club wanting a more entertaining name for the Welcome to Wrexham documentary as reasons why.

He said on the Second Tier podcast: “Let’s go with someone who can probably get packing their bags now, Phil Parkinson at Wrexham.

“Probably one that’s not going to go down well with some Wrexham fans. But the reason I say that is because I just look at the job he’s done so far and great, he’s a Wrexham legend without a doubt, of course back-to-back-to-back promotions, it’s a pretty impressive thing to do. But I think he is above his level now, I think he’s out of his depth in the Championship based off all the evidence that we’ve seen from him before at Championship level and to be honest, I’m quite surprised he’s managed to last this long at Wrexham because he’s not a big name he’s not someone who I think is going to enhance a documentary put it that way.

“So with that being said, I think this could be Phil Parkinson’s last season at Wrexham I think the most likely scenario is they don’t do as well as expected, and then they sack him and get in a manager who’s a much bigger name and is more entertaining for a documentary. So yeah Phil Parkinson, I’m pretty sure about losing his job at some point this season.”

Phil Parkinson’s Championship record

Parkinson’s Championship record is not the best, having spent time in the second tier previously with Bolton Wanderers and Charlton Athletic.

He’s taken charge of 141 matches throughout his career in the Championship, but won just 26.

That gives him a win rate of less than 19 percent, losing 78 times in the second division of English football.

But those stints were many years ago now, and Wrexham are being backed heavily in the market this summer.
