Fans were no doubt left stunned when they learned Ryan Reynolds was set to take ownership of Wrexham.

The Red Dragons had spent well over a decade outside of the EFL, floundering in the National League when Ryan Reynolds came knocking.

The American actor, best known for his role as Deadpool, purchased the Welsh club from their Supporters Trust in February 2021 alongside Always Sunny star, Rob McElhenney.

Under their guidance, Wrexham have gone from the National League up to League One and are still competing for a chance to play Championship football in the 2025/26 season.

The duo have backed the club heavily over the years, both on and off the field.

Reynolds and McElhenney are trying to get Wrexham into Europe via the Welsh League Cup, though those plans have hit a bit of a snag recently.

How Ryan Reynolds feels about Wrexham

Sunderland inspired McElhenney to buy Wrexham, with the actor then taking his idea to Reynolds.

However, despite it not being his plan to purchase a football club, the 48-year-old still remains firmly committed to the Red Dragons.

A source told Life and Style: “Ryan’s work in the Deadpool movies has generated billions of dollars in ticket sales and it’s kept him firmly on the Hollywood A-list, but the Wrexham project has been a lot closer to his heart and the partnership with Rob McElhenney continues to bear real fruit.

“It’s apples and oranges to compare these two franchises. [Wrexham] captured Ryan’s heart and that strong connection he has to the place is now allowing him to expand his businesses into new territories and capture entire new fan bases in the process.”

Welcome to Wrexham update

The source also shared an insight into the future of the ‘Welcome to Wrexham‘ series, which is now in its third season on Disney+.

The documentary, which Ryan and Rob are a big part of, has gained the club plenty of fans from around the world.

And while a date for a new series is yet to be confirmed, the source confirmed the Wrexham co-owners plan to continue making the documentary for as long as they can.

They said: “Even though Ryan has already sold a minority stake in the team, he and Rob are going to maintain control of the club and keep making the unscripted series as long as they can.

“The T.V. show, which Ryan and Rob also have ownership stakes in, is the same deal—it’s something their kids can profit from long after they’re gone, especially in the streaming era when T.V. shows can have extra-long shelf lives.

“This was never a passing fancy for either of them, and they’ve already decided that they’re in this for the rest of their lives.”
