Sky Sports pundit doubles down on the Wrexham promotion prediction he made in January

Wrexham sit second in the League One table as Phil Parkinson chases a third straight promotion after beating Stockport County.

Two promotions in a row catapulted Wrexham from the National League to League One.

Many would have expected Wrexham to consolidate in League One before making a push for the Championship down the line.

Ryan Reynolds wanted another promotion immediately though, with the Hollywood star vowing to ‘go for broke’.

Here we are; Wrexham have eight games left to go in League One and sit second in the table.

Sky Sports pundit on Wrexham promotion hopes

Third-placed Wycombe Wanderers have a game in hand on Wrexham, but nothing quite beats points on the board.

Wrexham travel to take on Exeter City this weekend, and Parkinson will be looking for another big victory.

Every game is so important right now, and Parkinson has warned his players to stay focused on the task at hand.

This run-in will have twists and turns to come, but EFL pundit Aaron McLean seems confident in the outcome.

Speaking to Sky Sports, McLean noted that he backed Wrexham for promotion back in January – and is sticking by that prediction.

McLean praised Wrexham’s wins over Wycombe and Stockport, believing they were simply ‘huge’ results.

Paul Merson loves Wrexham’s run-in, and McLean agrees, suggesting that the odds are ‘stacked in Wrexham’s favour’ given Wycombe’s difficult fixtures to come.

“So much to play for, both teams desperate to obviously finish in that second spot,” said McLean.

“When we spoke in January, it was neck and neck, I tipped Wrexham to be the team that went up and I stand by it.

“It was a huge win, first of all beating Wycombe, to get that victory over them and get above them, that was huge.

“Then to get the win on Saturday against Stockport, which, over the years, has all of a sudden turned into a bit of a derby because they’ve both got the promotions from the National League now into League One and pushing to get into the Championship.

“There’s a real rivalry between those two, so for Wrexham to come out on the right side of that, was a huge three points for them.

“Just looking at the two teams’ run-ins, you’d have to say that Wrexham have got – on paper – a much easier run-in, they only play one of the top 10 in their final games of the season, whereas Wycombe play six of the top ten.

“Really, really difficult fixtures and all the teams that Wrexham play, they’ve not lost against any of them so far this season, so you’d have to say the odds are heavily stacked in Wrexham’s favour,” he added.

Wrexham must take advantage of next five games

Wrexham’s run-in looks more favourable than Wycombe’s as the race for promotion enters its final stretch.

Wycombe still face very testing trips to Reading, Huddersfield Town, Bolton and Leyton Orient.

Their home games are tricky too, with Lincoln City, Shrewsbury Town, Stevenage, Charlton Athletic and Stockport County to come.

From those Wycombe fixtures, only one team – Shrewsbury Town – sit outside the top 13 in the League One table.

In fact, from fourth to 13th, Blackpool and Barnsley are the only teams Wycombe don’t play before the end of the season.

That is a testing run-in to say the very least, and Wrexham must take advantage of a favourable run-in.

Wrexham’s next five games are against Exeter City, Cambridge United, Burton Albion, Wigan Athletic and Bristol Rovers.

All five sit in the bottom nine spots of the League One table and either have little to play for or could be dragged into the relegation zone.

This is a golden chance for Wrexham to kick on and secure promotion, and missing out on an automatic from here would feel like a real missed opportunity.
