Phil Parkinson sends ‘dangerous’ promotion warning to Wrexham after beating Stockport County

Wrexham moved another step closer to promotion on Saturday afternoon by beating Stockport County 1-0 at the STōK Cae Ras.

Wrexham have just eight games to go and promotion to the Championship is moving closer.

Phil Parkinson watched on as Wrexham beat Stockport County 1-0 on Saturday afternoon, securing a fourth win in the last five games.

Jay Rodriguez won it for Wrexham, converting on the rebound after Corey Addai had saved his first-half penalty.

Stockport were furious with the Wrexham penalty but all that matters for Parkinson is the three points.

Wycombe Wanderers were not in action due to Huddersfield Town’s international call-ups and Wrexham took full advantage to go three points ahead of the Chairboys.

Phil Parkinson fires Wrexham promotion warning

Wrexham are in the box seat right now but Wycombe will have a game in hand to come in April.

Parkinson has already guided Wrexham to two straight promotions and now wants a third.

Paul Merson loves Wrexham’s fixtures with a favourable run-in presenting a great chance at promotion.

The race for second place now appears to be down to Wrexham and Wycombe, but Parkinson is warning his players against that kind of mindset.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Parkinson has admitted that he doesn’t buy into the idea of a two-horse race.

Parkinson feels that Charlton Athletic and Stockport could still make a move towards second place despite a gap being opened up.

Parkinson wants his Wrexham players to remain focused and avoid a ‘dangerous mindset’ of believing that other clubs can’t catch up from behind.

“For quite a while people have been saying it’s a two-horse race,” said Parkinson. “I don’t buy into that at all.

“It’s a dangerous mindset to have, writing other teams off. Charlton have been on a brilliant run, they’ve come unstuck today.

“Us beating Stockport just opens that gap between us. I’m just going to keep concentrating on ourselves and see if we can win enough games to keep us in that top two,” he added.

Results over the weekend perfect for Wrexham

Parkinson is trying to keep his Wrexham players focused on the task at hand and doesn’t want any complacency to slip in.

The Wrexham boss will surely have felt a little more comfortable after the weekend results though.

Wrexham’s win over Stockport leaves County nine points away with just eight games to go.

A Stockport victory would have cut the gap to just three points but Wrexham’s victory almost certainly takes them out of the equation.

Darren Ferguson did Wrexham a favour too as his Peterborough United side beat Charlton Athletic 3-0.

The Addicks have been exceptional of late and had been closing the gap to the automatic promotion spots.

Saturday’s defeat leaves Charlton eight points adrift though and it will take a major turnaround for them to challenge Wrexham again.
