Steve Evans issues clear Wrexham promotion verdict after they were ‘totally outplayed’ by Rotherham United

Steve Evans had a lot to say after his Rotherham United side lost to Wrexham on March 8th.

Normal service resumed for Wrexham at the Racecourse Ground when they played host to Rotherham on Saturday.

The Welsh outfit had rather uncharacteristically failed to win any of their previous four matches in Wales, including the EFL Trophy exit to Peterborough United.

But Sam Smith scored in the 48th minute of Saturday’s encounter to see Wrexham beat Rotherham 1-0.

It was a great result but did not end up proving enough to push the Red Dragons up the table ahead of Wycombe Wanderers.

Wycombe maintain their second-place positon despite drawing with Peterborough United as they have a six-better goal difference than Phil Parkinson’s side right now.

Steve Evans on Wrexham promotion chances after Rotherham United

Wrexham are set to travel to Reading on Tuesday evening before meeting the Chairboys at the Adams Park Stadium on Saturday, March 15th.

There will still be nine more fixtures to play after that clash but given how close the race is for second right now, the winner of said meeting will be put firmly in the driver’s seat.

However, speaking post-match on March 8th, Rotherham manager Steve Evans is now ‘sure’ Wrexham’ will win promotion.

He also claimed that Parkinson’s men were ‘outplayed’ in both of their meetings this season – the previous also ending 1-0 to Wrexham in October.

Evans said: “I’m sure Wrexham will get promoted. I wasn’t so sure before today but I look at today and I think they’ve been totally outplayed.

“They were totally outplayed at the New York and they get six points. But that’s what sometimes happens when you win promotions.”

Wrexham fixtures compared to Wycombe Wanderers

Birmingham City are already out of sight at the top of League One, with the second automatic promotion place almost certainly going to Wrexham or Wycombe.

Next up for the former is a meeting with Reading before they, as already mentioned clash with Wycombe.

Mike Dodds’ men, meanwhile, now have an entire week off ahead of their meeting with Wrexham.

On paper, the Hollywood-owned club have a slightly tougher run of games coming up, but that’s unlikely to bother Parkinson.
