‘Very difficult’ – Summer transfer for Wrexham striker Paul Mullin mooted by EFL pundit after Parkinson snub

The future of Paul Mullin at Wrexham has been called into question in the last few months.

Paul Mullin has failed to feature in any of the Red Dragons’ last six Legaue One meetings and questions over his long-term future at the Racecourse Ground are being asked.

Mullin did have a shin injury earlier this year, but even after returning, he’s been kept out of matchday squads by Sam Smith, Jay Rodriguez, Jack Marriott, and Steven Fletcher.

The 30-year-old has been the club’s top scorer in the previous three campaigns but could set an unwanted personal record in 2024/25.

Mullin’s game time was discussed last week, with one journalist questioning how many more kicks of a ball he will have in a Wrexham shirt.

Meanwhile, a Sky Sports pundit commented on the Wrexham striker’s future late last month, suggesting his story with the Welsh side is coming to an end.

Carlton Palmer on Paul Mullin Wrexham future

The Englishman remains under contract until 2027, but it’s clear changes will have to be made to the club’s frontline in the summer.

Parkinson already has seven senior strikers on his books, and if they want to sign another number nine in the next transfer window, one or two will have to depart.

Given Mullin and Ollie Palmer are no longer featuring, it would make sense for one or both of them to depart.

Now, as per Football League World, EFL pundit Carlton Palmer has been discussing the former of the duo and stated his belief that it will be ‘very difficult’ for the striker to get minutes next term and that he’d be ‘surprised’ if Mullin remains at Wrexham for 2025/26.

He said: “The writing is on the wall. He remains under contract until 2027, but at his age I would have thought he wants to move on, and play regular football. I think it’ll be in the interest of both parties.

“He’s a legend of the football club, he’s done unbelievable, but Wrexham are moving at a tremendous pace and it’s going to be difficult for him with the strikers they’ve brought in, and with the strikers they have on the bench too, like Steven Fletcher and Jack Marriott.

“It’s going to be very difficult for him to get game time and be in the squad. I’d be very surprised if Paul is still at Wrexham next season.”

What Paul Mullin said about leaving Wrexham

It’ll be a sad day when the forward does eventually leave Wrexham, whether by a transfer or simply retiring in a few years.

However, it does seem like if the forward had his way, he would stay with the Red Dragons for as long as possible.

Mullin commented on leaving Wrexham in April 2024, saying: “Obviously, I want to play at the highest level possible. I’d love to play for Wales, the country where my nan was born. But in terms of leaving the club it’s never something I think about.

“I signed a new contract with Wrexham in January because I absolutely adore it. I come home every day and see Albi (his son), which is the main reason I signed in the first place.”
