Wrexham have relied heavily on Steven Fletcher to keep their promotion push going recently.

Steven Fletcher joined the Red Dragons on a free transfer in September 2023 after leaving Dundee United.

His 2024/25 campaign got off to a slow start but the striker’s importance to Wrexham has grown massively over the last month or so.

Fletcher came off the bench to help the Welsh outfit earn a point in a 2-2 draw with Cambridge United on December 14th.

The Scotsman then scored winning goals in meetings with Wigan Athletic and Blackpool during the festive period.

Most recently, Fletcher set a Wrexham record after coming on to net a winner during the 1-0 win over Peterborough United last weekend.

Phil Parkinson hints at new role for Steven Fletcher

Fletcher, despite largely starting as a substitute in most games this season, is now the club’s joint-top scorer in League One this term alongside Jack Marriott.

Paul Mullin (2) and Ollie Palmer (3) have scored fewer goals despite playing a lot more minutes.

In turn, some Wrexham fans may wish to see the 37-year-old begin to start more matches going forward.

Now, as per Leader Live, Phil Parkinson explained why the former Sunderland man could not previously start matches owing to his knee problem.

But he did reveal they considered starting him against Peterborough, seemingly hinting his time as a sub is coming to an end and he could now be used as a regular starter going forward as he’s had enough time to train properly.

He said: “Fletch has had a problem with his knee this season which we’ve had to manage his training time during the week.

“We just haven’t been able to get the training volume in him to start him.

“He’s getting better now and we were tempted (to start him against Peterborough) because we knew the game would be a bit flatter with the sheer volume of games we’ve had.”

Steven Fletcher praises Phil Parkinson

Fletcher has so far started just one league matche in 2024/25 – a 1-0 defeat to Stevenage back in early October.

However, likely owing to his injury issue, the striker doesn’t seem too bothered by his lack of starts and has praised Parkinson for the way he’s used him.

He said: “He’s approachable, he will come and speak to you every day.

“From a personal point of view he’s been brilliant for me; just the way he uses me and the way he treats me.

“He understands my body. Obviously I’m 37 now and he’s been great for me.  I’m really enjoying working under him.”

Wrexham return to action on January 16th against Shrewsbury Town and it will be interesting to see if Fletcher is given the nod over Ollie Palmer.
