Paul Mullin enjoyed several prolific years with Wrexham and has continued to score while out on loan, but a potential replacement for the now 30-year-old hasn’t fared as well in recent years.

Wrexham snapped up Paul Mullin on a free transfer in 2021, securing what is arguably their greatest-ever deal.

The centre-forward scored 110 goals for the Red Dragons during his spell in North Wales before being shipped out on loan to Wigan Athletic for the 2025/26 campaign.

Mullin is in good form for Wigan and has hinted that his future may be away from Wrexham moving forward.

Since his exit, the Welsh outfit have added plenty of attackers to their ranks, including Kieffer Moore and Ryan Hardie.

But one player Wrexham tried to sign as a potential replacement for one of their all-time record goalscorers has really struggled in recent years.

Wrexham eyed Brandon Hanlan as Paul Mullin replacement

Mullin missed the start of the 2023/24 League Two campaign at Wrexham after puncturing his lung in a pre-season fixture.

The striker was their top-scorer in the previous two seasons and having him out of action was not ideal as they looked to secure a second straight promotion.

In turn, Wrexham were eyeing up a late move for another centre-forward towards the end of the 2023 summer transfer window.

It was reported at the time that the Dragons were looking at Brandon Hanlan as a replacement for Mullin.

The centre-forward was plying his trade with Wycombe Wanderers at the time and was left out of their matchday squad amid speculation around a move.

However, a move never came to pass and he has gone on to struggle for consistent form over the last several years.

Wrexham lucky to avoid Brandon Hanlan transfer

Hanlan remained at Wycombe for a couple of years but quickly fell out of favour and was sent out on loan to Stevenage.

2024/25 saw him make 24 appearances in League One, scoring just two goals.

He last found the back of the net in the league on March 1, 2025, during a 2-1 defeat to Huddersfield Town.

The 28-year-old has since moved to Doncaster Rovers and has so far failed to score for the Yorkshire club in their opening six League One ties of 2025/26.
