Wrexham have now signed Callum Doyle from Manchester City, with the 21-year-old becoming Phil Parkinson’s tenth signing of the summer.

Wrexham are showing no signs of slowing down in the summer transfer market, completing yet another impressive big money signing.

Last week it was reported that Callum Doyle was set to arrive at the Racecourse. Then on Thursday evening, Wrexham confirmed that Doyle has joined the club, signing a four-year deal worth £8 million.

He becomes the club’s second most expensive signing of all time, after Wrexham signed Nathan Broadhead in a £10 million deal last week.

The signing of Doyle also takes Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac’s summer spending beyond the £30 million mark.

Man City insert buyback clause in Wrexham’s deal for Callum Doyle

Signing Doyle is a real coup for Parkinson. He’s a young defender experienced in the Championship with huge potential for the future, but it seems as though Man City know that selling Doyle could come back to bite them.

Pep Guardiola’s side have, in fact, inserted a buyback option into the deal to sell Doyle, as they have done with other young prospects who have left the Etihad Stadium in recent years, including Middlesbrough’s Micah Hamilton.

In terms of how much Wrexham are paying for Doyle, the BBC reports that the fee could rise to £7.5m, making him the club’s second-most expensive signing behind Nathan Broadhead if add-ons are met.

It is also believed that Man City have included a 25% sell-on clause in the deal.

Why Callum Doyle could become Wrexham’s best signing of the summer

Wrexham have signed a lot of firepower this summer. Names like Broadhead, Kieffer Moore, and Josh Windass all greatly improve a Wrexham attack with proven Championship experience.

And in their opening two games, Wrexham have shown that they are capable of scoring goals, even scoring twice despite losing 3-2 against West Brom in their last outing.

But defensively, the Dragons have been poor. Adding Doyle to the defence though will greatly bolster it and Doyle could become a first-team regular for many years to come. And what’s great about Doyle is that he can operate as a left-back or a centre-back.

Spending time on loan with the likes of Leicester City, Coventry City, and Norwich City in the Championship, Doyle has featured heavily on both the left and in the middle of defence and he’ll certainly give Parkinson good options in his back-five or even to play a back-four, potentially with Doyle and Coady forming a solid partnership.

Wrexham play Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship on Saturday, in a 3pm kick off.
