Wrexham are revelling in their third successive promotion in the English Football League.

Ryan Reynolds is still watching Sam Smith’s goal against Charlton Athletic in a match that saw Wrexham run out 3-0 winners and secure automatic promotion from League One.

Wrexham had some key victories during their campaign but Phil Parkinson’s side saved their best until the end with a remarkable performance at the Racecourse Ground when it really mattered.

Now, attentions turn to next season in the Championship and Wrexham are interested in signing Callum Robinson as part of their squad development. There will also be some other changes for fans to get used to next campaign.

Three key changes for Wrexham upon promotion to Championship

The Red Dragons are back in the second tier for the first time since 1982 and with Championship status comes some slightly different rules and perks.

Here are three key changes that will impact Parkinson’s side next season.

Wrexham can name 9 substitutes in the Championship

Up until now during the reign of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, Wrexham have been able to name a matchday squad involving 18 players – eleven starters and seven substitutes.

However, upon promotion to the Championship, Parkinson now has the ability to name nine subs under EFL rules.

It means the manager will have more options to change a game from his bench and could be a lifeline for players who have found themselves exiled in recent months.

Paul Mullin has suitable clubs to leave for however, should he choose to stay and fight for his place both he and Ollie Palmer could be given more opportunities to make an impact from the bench.

Wrexham will have international breaks throughout the season

With a step up in quality, Wrexham will now have international breaks in their calendar with players departing off to play for their respective national sides.

In Leagues one and two, the odd game may have been postponed upon request from clubs, if they had a number of players away on international duty however, in the Championship, it is factored in to the schedule.

The Red Dragons can expect their first break at the beginning of September, just after the summer transfer deadline, then one in October and November.

The final international break of the season falls in March and countries will be busy preparing for a potential World Cup in the summer of 2026.

Wrexham will enter the FA Cup in the third round

One of the most disappointing days of this season came back in November when Wrexham were dumped out of the FA Cup in the first round away to Harrogate Town.

Parkinson had strong words for his squad after that defeat but next campaign the Red Dragons will have the luxury of entering at the third round stage.

Premier League and Championship clubs do not come into the competition until the third round in January, meaning more prize money will be at stake for the club.

Wrexham beat Championship opposition in Coventry back in 2023 at the third round stage before losing out to Sheffield United in a pulsating fourth round replay.
