What Ben Foster said about Wrexham in May is already coming true – Phil Parkinson deserves credit

Wrexham have enjoyed an excellent start to life in League One under manager Phil Parkinson.

The Red Dragons secured back-to-back promotions under Phil Parkinson and are now battling it out in the third tier for the first time since the early 2000s.

Their League One campaign got off to a superb start with a 3-2 win over Wycombe Wanderers and they have since been largely able to keep pace with the top sides in the division.

Wrexham did lose to Stockport County in their last league fixture and have slipped out of the automatic promotion places for the time being.

But it is hard to argue that the Welsh outfit have not already outperformed most people’s exceptions.

Before the 2024/25 season got underway, Opta gave Wrexham a 0.02 percent chance of winning promotion to the Championship via the automatic spots.

Elsewhere, Ben Foster shared an exciting prediction for Wrexham back in May of 2024.

Ben Foster Wrexham prediction

Foster played 12 times for Wrexham during his six-month spell at the club and made that huge penalty save against Notts County, which eventually helped win them the title.

He then announced his retirement from the game in August last year but remains part of the footballing world via his YouTube channel and podcast.

And speaking on his Fozcast podcast back in May of this year, the former goalkeeper backed Wrexham to recruit well over the summer and be in contention for a play-off spot come the end of 2024/25.

He said: “I think they’re going to do it, I really do. I think they’re going to invest in half a dozen really good players. Solid people, solid professionals that are going to raise the standard a little bit more.

“What they’ve got in that team anyway is League One level. If they add more quality, more experience, they’re going to be there or thereabouts again come the end of the season.

“I guarantee you, the owners, manager [Phil Parkinson], the coaching staff and even some of the players will not be thinking about solidifying. They’ll be thinking they want to at least be knocking on the doors of the play-offs.

“It’s hard to replace that level of person in the changing room. If one club can do it, Wrexham can do it because their recruitment policy is: ‘We recruit people first and they have to be good at football’.”

Phil Parkinson needs credit for helping Ben Foster Wrexham call come true

Foster’s prediction came prior to the 2024 summer transfer window when Wrexham had not signed a single player.

The Red Dragons eventually went on to bring nine new faces to the Racecourse Ground, most of which have fared very well.

Lewis Brunt is the only signing yet to see too much game time but the likes of George Dobson and Arthur Okonkwo have been superb for the club.

And with Wrexham currently third in League One right now, it looks as though Foster’s prediction of a play-off finish is well on course to come true.

Parkinson’s role in Wrexham’s recent success cannot be understated though as he, like Foster mentioned, is very particular about the type of player his side sign – a policy that has worked wonders to date.
