Wrexham were held to a frustrating draw against League One strugglers Cambridge United.
Ryan Reynolds was left deflated after Cambridge’s last-minute equaliser – a feeling that was echoed by many Wrexham supporters.
Despite falling behind in the early stages, Phil Parkinson’s side fought back to take a 2-1 lead in the second half – thanks to a ‘beautiful’ goal from James McClean.
The Red Dragons however would fail to see out the game, with Dan Nlundulu equalising in the 89th minute from the penalty spot.
Sat 22nd in League One, Cambridge United boss Garry Monk will undoubtedly be over the moon with a point, and the 45-year-old highlighted the difficulty of facing Wrexham post-match.

Garry Monk highlights the difficulty of facing Wrexham
The Racecourse Ground is a tough place for any team to visit but Cambridge were able to thwart the Wrexham onslaught and earn themselves a crucial point.
Speaking to the Cambridge media team post-match, Monk highlighted how impressive the result was considering Wrexham’s recent form.
“It was a real underdog performance. I thought we were excellent. To come here (Wrexham) with the momentum they have behind them and the results they’ve been getting, the crowd as well, and how they play their part here. So we had to be really focused and understand we were going to have to deal with a lot of that.
“I thought we were excellent all the way through and probably a tinge of disappointment that we didn’t actually win the game. We put ourselves in some really good positions and we were really unfortunate with the second goal,” said Monk.
Despite 19 places separating the two sides in the league, Cambridge gave Wrexham problems throughout and Monk believes his side could have snuck all three points.
“We finished the game strong and got a more than deserved equaliser. Like I said earlier, in the changing rooms there is a tinge of disappointment that we were probably the team that should have won the game.”
Wrexham’s stats vs Cambridge may worry Phil Parkinson
With Wrexham chasing promotion and Cambridge fighting for their lives in the relegation zone, many would have thought the Red Dragons would easily overcome Monk’s side.
The U’s however presented many problems for Wrexham and Monk’s claims that his team ‘should’ have won the game – may run true if you take a look at the stats.
| Wrexham | Cambridge | |
| Possession | 56% | 44% |
| xG | 0.92 | 1.52 |
| Total shots | 11 | 14 |
| Shots on target | 4 | 6 |
| Big chances | 3 | 3 |
| Big chances missed | 1 | 1 |
Having only conceded 13 goals so far in League One this season, Wrexham’s strengths undoubtedly lie in defence.
Parkinson and his coaching staff though would not have been expecting to be bettered in the attacking stats by a team 19 places below them in the league – something they may need to fix before their next fixture against Bristol Rovers.
