What Wrexham ‘have in abundance’ that will help them win League One promotion ahead of Wycombe Wanderers

Wrexham are potentially four games away from seeing off Wycombe Wanderers and making history.

No side starting in the fifth tier of English football or above has ever won three promotions in a row, but this looks likely to change.

Wrexham are favoured to win promotion ahead of Wycombe Wanderers, who are currently only one point adrift of the Red Dragons.

Wycombe have a better goal difference as well, meaning it will be even more difficult for the Welsh side to go back-to-back-to-back.

However, there are a couple of things that should give Phil Parkinson’s team a boost in their run-in.

Firstly, Wrexham’s fixtures compared to Wycombe are now much more favourable in the final four game weeks.

Eoghan O’Connell lauds Wrexham experience in promotion run-in

Meanwhile, Eoghan O’Connell has now been discussing something else that the club have that should help them get over the line.

Parkinson has praised O’Connell for acting as the senior figure in his back-three alongside the less experienced Lewis Brunt and Max Cleworth.

However, Cleworth has been with the club since the takeover in 2021 and, along with a lot of the squad, already knows what it’s like to be in a promotion battle.

On this front, O’Connell thinks Wrexham have experience and nous in abundance, as per Leader Live.

He said: “I’ve always enjoyed this stage of the season and we have experience of these run-ins over the last few years.

“I think that is crucial but then you’ve got other lads who’ve come in and might not have been involved or younger lads who are fresh to it and experiencing it for the first time.

“They have that effect on us as well to drive us on, even though we’ve done it for the last couple of years.

“I suppose a bit of experience and nous is something we have in abundance and obviously experience of the last few years definitely helps.”

How Wrexham players feel about promotion run-in

This season has been one of the toughest in recent memory for Wrexham, who could still quite easily miss out on automatic promotion.

However, O’Connell added that the players are now excited for the final few matches of 2024/25.

He said: “We’ve always been a team that chase the performance and if we play well and do what we’re good at, the majority of the time we come out with the win,” he added.

“The way we play and the way we are as a team, there’s never a lack of effort. We’re always giving our all and we’re excited for the last few games.

“Any victory at this stage of the season is a big victory.”
