Following Paul Mullin’s yellow card against Notts County he is suspended for the home clash against Gillingham. With the star missing out, Ollie Palmer has to step up to fill the void left.
Last time out in League Two, Wrexham came away from a huge game against Notts County with a memorable 2-0 win.
The positive result did come at a cost as Paul Mullin received a yellow card for an argument with the referee. This saw him register his fifth caution of the season which means he is ineligible for one match.
With the Welshman missing, there is a gap that needs to be filled to help Phil Parkinson’s side keep their unbeaten run going.
Against Mansfield Town, Sam Dalby scored his second goal of the season but he will still be desperate for his first League Two goal.
Ollie Palmer helped to secure the win over Notts County and he is likely to come in alongside Dalby.
What has Paul Mullin said?
It is safe to say that the Reds’ striker wasn’t best pleased with the circumstances that he received a yellow card last time out.
Speaking with Leader Live, Mullin opened up about the suspension against Gillingham.
On missing out this weekend, the Reds star said: “I am devastated, I want to play every game and help the lads as much as I can.”
Fans will share this feeling with their striker due to how good he is. With four goals and an assist in League Two, he will be missed.
In spite of his disappointment, he understands why he has to miss out: “It’s my fault, I shouldn’t have got booked so much but you get booked for anything you do these days.
“If I breathe on someone I get booked.”
Some fans did feel that he had been hard done by as he complained to the referee and received a booking for that.
On another day, the official may have not booked him and been more lenient. It is on Mullin at the end of the day, but it can be said he was unfortunate.
The Welsh striker has learnt from this: “When I do get back in the team after the suspension, I will try not to get booked just for asking the referee about a decision.”
Hopefully, moving forward the striker can avoid needless bookings and stay in the team every week.
Ollie Palmer needs to step up
Palmer signed for Wrexham in January 2022 and has scored 38 goals in his 98 appearances for the club.
Given his £5k-a-week wages, some fans may feel that the big striker could get on the scoresheet more often this season.
In defence of the former Wimbledon man, he has only been given four starts since the start of October and has one goal.
With Mullin missing, Palmer becomes the senior head of the forward line alongside 23-year old Dalby.
That is a responsibility that he is going to take in his stride given his experience and hopefully, he can get himself back on the scoresheet.
