Why Ollie Palmer ignored advice from ‘so many people’ to sign for Wrexham, it was the ‘right move’

Ollie Palmer is a Wrexham legend, but he wouldn’t have signed for the club in the first place if he had listened to those around him who told him not to.

The 33-year-old has now scored 42 goals for the Red Dragons in 149 appearances over the last three years, including some absolutely crucial strikes.

Whether Ollie Palmer will add to that tally or not remains to be seen, with endless rumours linking him away from Wrexham this summer.

Palmer could well follow Paul Mullin out of the door in the coming weeks, but by the sounds of it, he’s more than thankful for the time he has spent at the club.

Ollie Palmer was told not to sign for Wrexham before Phil Parkinson convinced him

On the club’s YouTube channel, the story of Wrexham’s historic back-to-back-to-back promotions has been shared, with Palmer offering some insight into his decision to join the club back in 2022.

He said: “So many people told me not to do it [sign for Wrexham], but after the conversation I had with the gaffer I decided that it was the right move for me and I believed in the project. Everything he said has come true and I’m so pleased that I’ve done it.

“Everyone knows that I’ve commuted with my family back in London and Wrexham has become a second home. It’s somewhere now that I want to be able to come in 20 or 30 years’ time and be welcomed back with open arms, enjoy Wrexham games and look back with fondness on the memories.

“There are plenty of fond memories and it’s been the best three-and-a-half years of my career so far, easily.”

At the time, Palmer had dropped down two divisions to join Wrexham, leaving AFC Wimbledon, who were struggling in League One at the time to fight it out in the National League with the Red Dragons. A bold move, but one that has definitely paid off for Palmer.

Will Ollie Palmer leave Wrexham this summer?

All eyes will be on Wrexham’s pre-season tour in Australia to see how much of a role Palmer plays this summer. That will give us a big clue as to where his future lies, but the assumption is that he will not be part of Phil Parkinson’s plans for the Championship campaign.

Palmer has been waiting for a return to the Wrexham line-up for a while now, but has fallen down the pecking order with the arrivals of Sam Smith, Ryan Hardie, and Jay Rodriguez.

It is thought Parkinson has told Palmer he can leave this summer. The big striker did make 31 appearances last season but, like Mullin, was excluded from the matchday squad for the final 18 games of the campaign.

It’s highly unlikely that a player Parkinson didn’t utilise in League One would be given much game time in the second tier, and we firmly expect Palmer to move on soon.
