Paul Mullin is currently on loan at Wigan Athletic in League One, as he attempts to get first-team minutes, as it appeared he would be limited following Wrexham’s summer transfer window.

Wrexham spent £33 million this summer and acquired some incredible talent in attack with the likes of Kieffer Moore and Josh Windass moving to the Racecourse Ground.

The 30-year-old striker opted to go on loan this season, not wanting to spend the majority of his time on the bench, with the move seemingly going relatively well to this point, with rumours Mullin may be considering a future move to Wigan.

However, following the latest comments from the Latics manager Ryan Lowe, there appears to be some frustration with the attention around the striker.

Ryan Lowe is frustrated with the attention on Paul Mullin

There will have been an understanding at Wigan Athletic that by signing Paul Mullin, there would be media attention from the UK and the USA on the club due to the newfound celebrity of the striker, but the main reason behind the deal was for his footballing ability.

While they seemed to accept it at the time, Ryan Lowe appears to be frustrated now with some elements of this attention, particularly after his decision to substitute Mullin at half time, as explained by his reaction in the post-match press conference from their 1-0 defeat to Wycombe Wanderers, as reported by Wigan Today.

He said: “Everything’s about Paul Mullin; it’s not about Paul Mullin – just because he’s been on these documentaries and everything else, Paul Mullin’s just a normal lad and a good footballer.

“Everything seems to be Paul Mullin, Paul Mullin. I’m not bothered about the drama of Paul Mullin – I’m bothered about my strikers scoring goals, and that’s what I want.

“I don’t think he had many chances, if any, and I thought we needed a bit of pace in behind, hence why we brought on Dara (Costelloe). We wanted to change it so we had one coming towards the ball and one going in behind.

“The players need to keep going because when you’re down on confidence, you don’t hit the back of the net. We had three glorious chances and couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net.

“But it wasn’t just Mulls I changed. I brought Raph (Borges Rodrigues) off as well and made another change by bringing Robbo (Luke Robinson) off. Them lads have been struggling a bit with injury; hence, why they didn’t start potentially.”

Paul Mullin’s recent struggles at Wigan Athletic

The Wrexham loanee has been struggling in the last few weeks for Wigan, as the whole team have struggled in this recent period, having failed to win in their last six matches.

Mullin has also not been firing on all cylinders in front of goal, as he has only managed to score four goals this season across his 15 appearances.

The striker may need a break out of the starting XI after it was believed that Mullin suffered an injury recently, but the player featured only a matter of days after this worry.

While there is no concern about the striker’s ability at this level, it may be the case that he needs to reflect and restart after a match out of the squad to allow him to find form to be able to help Wigan climb the table.
