Wrexham defender Dan Scarr comments on ‘crazy’ summer for boyhood club Birmingham City

Wrexham are back in action on Monday night as Phil Parkinson takes his side to take on Birmingham City in a huge League One clash.

The weekend is over and Wrexham fans may have been feeling a mixture of relaxation and looming anxiety.

No Saturday game means Wrexham supporters were able to watch the scores coming in without stressing about results.

However, Wrexham do have a huge game this evening as Phil Parkinson and co travel to St Andrew’s to take on Birmingham City.

This is an enormous clash with all eyes on two sides who are showing real ambition in a quest for promotion to the Championship.

Both sides have celebrity involvement and we have seen Tom Brady going back and forth with Rob McElhenney ahead of the game.

Dan Scarr on Birmingham City spending

Rival League One fans seem to have a real bee in their bonnet about Birmingham and Wrexham.

The North American ownership with celebrity involvement doesn’t help but both clubs have been criticised over spending in the transfer market.

Wrexham spent nowhere near Birmingham’s level in terms of transfer fees but claims have been made about the wages being offered at the STōK Cae Ras.

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony claims that Wrexham signed Lewis Brunt by hijacking his move to the Posh with the offer of £3,000-a-week more in wages.

Wrexham can be delighted with a busy summer window and one signing has certainly been tracking Birmingham’s business.

Defender Dan Scarr is a boyhood Birmingham fan and immediately looked ahead to facing the Blues upon joining Wrexham from Plymouth Argyle.

Scarr is a little rusty at the moment and may only be on the bench against Birmingham but he has now commented on the wild summer for his boyhood club.

Scarr has told The Athletic that Birmingham’s summer was simply ‘crazy’ but great for those of a Blues persuasion.

The defender is expecting an ‘electric’ atmosphere but wants to ruin any positive vibes at St Andrew’s by winning the game with Wrexham.

“What’s been going on there is crazy,” said Scarr.

“Good for the city and, being a Birmingham City fan, it is great for them. The atmosphere will be electric and it’s a sellout. There’s also the bragging rights between the owners, both being American and stuff like that.

“But we want to stop that (title-winning) parade. Everything else doesn’t matter,” he added.

Birmingham spending compared to Wrexham

We touched on this earlier in September but Wrexham’s transfer outlay wasn’t even close to Birmingham’s over the summer.

Wrexham’s total spending for the summer in terms of transfer fees is thought to be around £2million.

Scarr, Brunt and Sebastian Revan were signed for ‘low six figures’ whilst Arthur Okonkwo, George Dobson, Callum Burton and latest signing Josh Adam have joined on free transfers.

Wrexham paid decent fees for Ollie Rathbone and Modou Faal, in the region of £500,000 each.

That is strong spending for Wrexham but Birmingham completely blew that out of the water.

The Athletic claim that Birmingham spent up to £25million on new signings over the summer, of which most was spent on Jay Stansfield.

£6million went on Willum Thor Willumsson and Christoph Klarer whilst striker Lyndon Dykes has arrived for around £1million.

Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Alfie May, Emil Hansson, Alex Cochrane, Marc Leonard, Ayumu Yokoyama, Scott Wright and Tomoki Iwata also joined whilst Luke Harris, Alfons Sampsted, Taylor Gardner-Hickman and Ben Davies have all joined on loan.

Wrexham’s spending comes nowhere close to this kind of investment and with Birmingham ready to unleash many of those signings, Scarr’s ‘crazy’ verdict sounds about right.
