Wrexham duo Paul Mullin and Ben Tozer have been named in the FA Cup Team of the Season for 2022/23.

Voted for by the fans, the eleven-player team was announced on June 15 and features the Wrexham pair alongside players from cup winners Manchester City, semi-finalists Brighton and Grimsby whose fairytale cup run ended at the quarter-final stage.

Mullin and Tozer were just two members of the Wrexham squad who made it into the fourth round of the FA Cup, the furthest the Welsh side have progressed in over two decades.

Wrexham’s talismanic striker Paul Mullin was a shoo-in for the Team of the Season, having scored a whopping nine goals to win the competition’s golden boot award.

Mullin netted in six of Wrexham’s seven matches in the FA Cup, including a hat-trick against Farnborough in the second round.

Defensive stalwart Ben Tozer sits at the heart of the Team of the Season’s back four, not only for his efforts in protecting Wrexham’s own goal but also for his trademark long throw-ins, that have led to countless goals for the Welsh side this season.

Tozer directly earned one assist with a long throw against Oldham in the first round while the missile-like set-piece also led to a goal and penalty against Coventry, and another goal against Sheffield United.

Wrexham’s inspiring run

As a National League team, Wrexham’s FA Cup run began in the fourth qualifying round against Blyth Spartans.

A 1-1 draw away in Northumberland meant a replay was required for Wrexham to progress but after dispatching Blyth 3-2 at the Racecourse, the Red Dragons made it into the FA Cup proper.

Wrexham’s 3-0 thumping of fellow National League side Oldham set up another home tie against Farnborough from the National League South, who were brushed aside in a 4-1 home win.

The third round saw Phil Parkinson’s team make the trip to Coventry City for a match that quickly turned into a goal fest as the Welsh side triumphed 4-3 against the would-be runners-up in the Championship play-offs.

Premier League-bound Sheffield United were the opposition in the fourth round, the furthest Wrexham had made it in the competition since 1999/2000.

Wrexham earned a replay after a late Mullin equalizer made it 3-3 at the Racecourse but their FA Cup run would come to an end in the reverse fixture as Sheffield United scored two injury-time goals to win 3-1.
