Wrexham fans have a lot to say as player ‘robbed’ – Birmingham City and Wycombe get the last laugh

It seems very likley that it will be Wrexham, Birmingham City and Wycombe Wanderers securing promotion from League One this season.

After Wrexham drew 0-0 with Wigan Athletic on Saturday, Birmingham City were crowned league champions without kicking a ball.

The final automatic promotion spot will now all but certainly go to one of Wycombe Wanderers or the Red Dragons.

Wrexham have the advantage right now, but this battle will likely go down to the final day of the season.

No matter what happens come to end of May 3, however, both clubs will likely back themselves to go on and win the play-offs if they miss out on second place.

Wycombe and Wrexham have both been superb this season, and fans of the latter will be surprised to learn of some recent news.

Wrexham fans think Max Cleworth ‘robbed’ of League One Player of the Season nomination

It has been announced this week that Phil Parkinson has been shortlisted for the League One Manager of the Season award.

That was to be expected given Wrexham’s league position, but the fact the Welsh outfit don’t have a single star up for the Player of the Season award has left fans bemused.

Richard Kone of Wycombe and Tomoki Iwata of Birmingham both made the top-three, while Red Dragons fans think Max Cleworth and maybe even Arthur Okonkwo should have been nominated.

One fan wrote: “Cleworth has been robbed there. Was outstanding in so many games this season.”

A second added: “Cleworth should be in the mix, consistently excellent in one of the best defensive records, plus his goals!”

“Surely Max has to be there,” a third Wrexham supporter replied.

A fourth claimed: “Cleworth robbed there. Barrie is a great player, but he left in January….. surely you should feature in the league all season.”

Another Wrexham fan added: “Okonkwo and Cleworth robbed,” with a sixth writing: “Wow I feel like Okonkwo should be on there 100 percent.”

Max Cleworth 2024/25 Wrexham stats

It’s easy to see why Wrexham fans aren’t overall happy with their star central defender not making the list.

Cleworth has huge potential and has arguably been the club’s most consistent player across 2024/25.

Okonkwo experienced a dip in form, while Ollie Rathbone didn’t cement himself as a regular starter straight away.

Cleworth, on the other hand, has been immense at both ends of the pitch across the entire campaign.
