Birmingham City manager Chris Davies bemoaned Wrexham’s summer spending after their 1-1 draw in the Championship on Friday night.

Wrexham welcomed Birmingham City to the Racecourse on Friday night, as the two teams finally met in the Championship following their successes in League One last season.

And Phil Parkinson’s side put in a strong first half display, going into the break a goal up thanks to George Dobson who netted his first of the season.

But Patrick Roberts scored for Birmingham City right after the restart as the Dragons looked much less imposing in the second half of the game, with Wrexham drawing 1-1 with Birmingham City in the end.

Birmingham City manager Chris Davies bemoans Wrexham spending

Speaking after the game, Birmingham City manager Chris Davies was quick to point out the big summer spending spree at the Racecourse.

Wrexham spent £33million on new signings. Birmingham City meanwhile spent around £12million on new signings this summer, but blew away the competition in League One last season with the £15million signing of Jay Stansfield.

Davies told Birmingham City’s official YouTube channel: “Just to remind people, they are the team that spent £30-40million. So they’ve got quality players. They’re a team that’s going to be difficult to play against… As I said to the players just now in the dressing room, we played better tonight than we did last season here where we also drew, but this was a better performance.

“It was us hanging on here last season at the end of the game. It was them hanging on this season. So that bodes well.”

Wrexham fans in hysterics at Chris Davies comments

Whilst Wrexham spent big this summer, Birmingham City also spent big with Blues spending the 8th most of any Championship club this summer, whilst Wrexham ranked in 3rd.

So Davies comments about Wrexham’s spending are a bit rich, as Wrexham fans pointed out on social media after the game.

“He paid £15million in league one for Jay Stansfield. Still double what we’ve paid for a player,” said one Wrexham supporter. Another added: “Birmingham talking about money spent is outrageous compared to what they have spent in the last 12 months.”

This fan posted: “Short memories and looks like a manager who actually is under pressure!” as another post read: “He forgot last year!”

Another comment read: “You spent £15million on Jay Stansfield whilst in League One. You haven’t got a leg to stand on.” This Wrexham fan added: “Rich coming from him.”

Wrexham now break for the internationals before returning to action against Stoke City later in the month.
