Wrexham and Birmingham City clashed in Friday evening’s Championship fixture.

The two sides have formed a rivalry in the last year, thanks to their North American investors.

Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds own Wrexham, while Tom Brady is a minority owner at Birmingham City.

The ‘Hollywood Derby’ has received much attention over the last year, with Brady currently holding bragging rights after the 2024/25 campaign.

Birmingham won the League One title with a record points total, while Wrexham took second place.

Head-to-head, it was the Blues who came out on top. They won 3-1 at St Andrew’s in 2024 before drawing 1-1 at the Racecourse Ground earlier this year.

After a £33m summer spend from Wrexham, though, the gap had, on paper at least, been bridged somewhat going into Friday’s tie.

Phil Parkinson makes a surprise call vs Birmingham City

Josh Windass had a foot issue after Leicester City, and his involvement, at least in the starting eleven, was in doubt prior to the match.

However, the former Sheffield Wednesday man, who has been so crucial this season, was in from the off against the Blues.

‘The only change to the eleven from the 1-1 draw with Leicester came in defence and was quite surprising.

Lewis Brunt has shone after breaking back into the team, but he was replaced on the left of the back-three by Callum Doyle for this tie.

How Wrexham fared vs Birmingham City

The tie started off cagey, with neither side looking to give too much away in the opening stages.

But Wrexham sprang to life shortly after the 10-minute mark and took advantage of Birmingham’s biggest weakness this season, set pieces.

After a barrage of shots, Max Cleworth’s headed effort from a corner was going straight at the Blues keeper but was diverted into the back of the net by George Dobson.

Lewis O’Brien could, and probably should have, made it 2-0 not long after, but his effort went straight at James Beadle.

Wrexham were then punished for not extending their lead as Birmingham equalised less than a minute into the second half.

The Dragons had a bit more joy as the game wore on, but Birmingham looked the more likely team to grab a winner.

In the end, the tie ended 1-1, and Wrexham’s wait for a win over Birmingham goes on, with their last coming back in 1997.
