Wrexham fans react as Phil Parkinson makes huge Paul Mullin call ahead of Stockport County clash

Paul Mullin has had an indifferent start to the League One campaign for Wrexham, leading to calls for him to be dropped from the starting XI.

Carlton Palmer urged Wrexham to sign a new striker to ease the pressure on the struggling Mullin, who has only a single league goal to his name this season.

The Englishman has been the talisman for Phil Parkinson’s side in their push up the divisions, scoring 24 goals as Wrexham were promoted from League Two last season.

This has undoubtedly given the striker some breathing room in terms of his starting spot, with Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman disagreeing with the criticism of Mullin.

It seems as though Parkinson has agreed with that sentiment for the most part. However, his team selection against Stockport on Saturday potentially signals a change in opinion.

Paul Mullin left on the bench against Stockport County

Mullin featured off the bench against Port Vale in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday and will have to settle for that again against Stockport as Jon Dadi Bodvarsson takes his place.

Red Dragons fans have taken to social media to react to the shock team news, with one saying: “A big call from Phil Parkinson as Mullin is dropped,” whilst another added: “We needed to take the risk of dropping Mullin at some point.”

Some Red Dragons couldn’t hide their shock, with one saying: “Mullin on the bench? Surprising, to say the least,” and another adding: “If someone had said at the start of the season that Mullin wouldn’t get in the team even with an injured Marriott, I would’ve laughed in their face!”

Other Wrexham fans chose to focus on Mullin’s replacement, saying: “Best player on Tuesday Bodvarsson, deserves his start,” whilst another added: “JDB has looked great. Excited to see what he does with more minutes.”

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson has a big opportunity vs Stockport County

Parkinson hinted at a Bodvarsson start against Stockport during the week and has followed through by selecting the Icelandic giant over Mullin.

Bodvarsson provided the assist for Max Cleworth’s goal against Port Vale on Tuesday, in what was his first start for Wrexham.

He was a useful focal point for Parkinson’s side, which will be an exciting prospect for Ollie Palmer and Elliot Lee who will hope to profit from potential knockdowns.

If Bodvarsson can continue his promising start for the Red Dragons, it may become a difficult task for Mullin to find his way back into the starting XI, a prospect that fans at the Racecourse Ground couldn’t have possibly predicted at the start of the season.
