Following the defeat to Southampton, Wrexham have been told by Ally McCoist that they may have ‘reached their level’ under Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac.
Wrexham got off to a losing start in their 2025/26 Championship season after suffering a defeat to Southampton at St Mary’s.
The Red Dragons were leading for large amounts of the contest, but two late Southampton goals condemned Wrexham to an opening-day loss.
Josh Windass shone for Wrexham despite the defeat, as did Kieffer Moore, but he looks set to now spend a spell on the sidelines as Phil Parkinson awaits a scan on the Welsh international.
Wrexham were defensively solid for large portions of the game, but the quality of Southampton proved to be too much to contend with in the end, which, as a result, has left former Rangers striker Ally McCoist wondering whether the Red Dragons have hit their peak under Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac.

Wrexham told they ‘might have reached their level’ following Southampton defeat
Following the defeat to Southampton, Wrexham have received praise from the national media after putting on a brilliant display at St Mary’s against a strong Southampton side.
However, former Rangers striker Ally McCoist has flipped the argument by wondering whether Wrexham have peaked in the Championship.
Via TalkSPORT, McCoist said: “It’s funny, I just think that they might have reached their level, maybe for a couple of (years).
“They want to get to the top flight, of course. But I always think the teams like Wrexham, they go up, they go up, they’ll find a level.
“And then they’ll maybe stabilise there for a wee while before, hopefully from their point of view, going on again.”
Wrexham will have an opportunity on Tuesday night to notch their first win of the season as they host Hull City in the EFL Cup.

Wrexham have not hit their ceiling, but the next jump is the biggest
Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac have provided the best times in Wrexham’s recent history after the club notched three successive promotions.
The rise of Wrexham has been glorious, but the next step will prove to be the most difficult.
Wrexham owners Reynolds and Mac have a dream to reach the Premier League with the Red Dragons, and there is no reason why they cannot continue their upwards trajectory, but it will require significant backing from this moment onwards.
If Wrexham can stabilise themselves in the Championship this season, that will give them the platform to hopefully push on in later seasons.
