Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson has issued an update on Kieffer Moore after his enforced substitution vs Southampton and whether his absence will impact any transfer dealings.

Wrexham faced Southampton in gameweek one of the 2025/26 Championship season, and despite a spirited performance from Phil Parkinson’s side, they went on to suffer a 2-1 defeat.

The Red Dragons showed their quality in the final third, particularly in the first half, with new arrivals Josh Windass and Kieffer Moore linking up splendidly.

It was Welsh international Moore who managed to win the penalty for Wrexham that put them ahead against the former Premier League side after he went on a swashbuckling run in on goal before drawing in a foul from Southampton centre-back Ronnie Edwards.

Moore was terrific on his Wrexham debut, and the game no doubt turned when he was forced to come off after sustaining an injury.

Parkinson has since given an update on the Red Dragons striker and how his absence could have an impact on any transfer dealings.

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson gives Kieffer Moore and transfer update

The Red Dragons boss has faced the media ahead of Wrexham’s clash with Hull City in the EFL Cup, which will see Phil Parkinson’s side hope to notch their first win of the campaign.

Via the BBC, Parkinson was unsurprisingly asked about Kieffer Moore’s injury on Saturday afternoon and any updates that he could provide on the forward.

“He is going to have a scan on his ankle so we won’t know the extent of that for a couple of days,” said Wrexham boss Parkinson.

“We have just got to keep our fingers crossed with it.

“We know which areas we want to add to the squad.

“Obviously if the scan comes back and it’s really bad, there might be a slight change of thought process.

“But in the main we are sticking to how we set out in the summer in terms of how we want the squad to be.”

When reflecting on Moore’s performance in the Championship opener vs Southampton, Parkinson then said: “I thought he was excellent.

“He was a bit low on his minutes going into the game, but I thought his all-round performance was very good.

“He got the penalty, he was a real handful, his hold-up play was good. We have just got to hope he is OK.”

Kieffer Moore injury surely makes ongoing Wrexham transfer pursuit more important

Since he took over at Wrexham in the National League, Phil Parkinson has always shown a desire to have an abundance of strikers to choose from.

Whether Kieffer Moore is available in the coming weeks or not, Wrexham will surely ramp up their interest in Nathan Broadhead, a fellow Welsh international from Ipswich Town.

Parkinson has Ryan Hardie to stand in ahead of the unavailable Moore, but extra depth is now paramount, making it necessary for Wrexham to up their pursuit for Broadhead and bring him to the Racecourse Ground sooner rather than later.

If Wrexham can make a breakthrough and sign Broadhead, the blow of Moore’s unavailability will be cushioned due to the arrival of a proven goalscorer at Championship level.
