Wrexham looked to be out of the League One title race but it may have just been blown wide open.

The Red Dragons are back competing in the third tier of English football for the first time since it was rebranded over two decades ago.

At present, Wrexham are sat third in the division going into their meeting with Mansfield Town on Sunday afternoon.

The Welsh side were beaten 2-1 by Leyton Orient on Tuesday, seeing Phil Parkinson set an unwanted record for the first time since he became manager.

After losing to Leyton Orient, Wrexham have moved five points behind Wycombe Wanderers in the table are well off the pace of Birmingham City.

However, that could change in the final few months of the 2024/25 League One season.

Wrexham have chance to catch Birmingham in League One title race

Currently, Wrexham are 11 points adrift of Birmingham having already played two more matches.

However, there are still 15 games of the season remaining for Parkinson’s side and there will be plenty of chances to make up points.

Tom Brady’s side are obviously going to be tough to catch but they have just been massively weakened.

Birmingham broke the League One transfer record to sign Jay Stansfield over the summer and, as expected, he has shone.

Stansfield has a staggering 16 goals and two assists in 23 league fixtures in 2024/25 so far.

However, the forward was injured in the EFL Trophy earlier this week and manager Chris Davies expressed ‘huge concern’, as per the Birmingham Mail.

He said: “It was above his knee. It was a bad fall and the player has landed on him. He’s gone to hospital for checks. To get stretchered off and be in that amount of pain is obviously a huge concern.

“I think it was the impact of the leg. It’s the severity of that impact. That’s what they’re concerned about. The guy has landed on the bone so that’s the concern. He was in a lot of pain and he’s gone off to the hospital, they’re hoping within the next few hours they are going to get the results that are more definitive.”
