Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney made feelings on sacking Phil Parkinson clear in honest chat

Wrexham lost to Leyton Orient on Tuesday evening and fan ire toward Phil Parkinson has begun to grow.

When the halfway point of the season arrived, it seemed very likely Wrexham would be in contention to secure automatic promotion.

Getting the better of Birmingham City was always going to be an impossible task given the money thrown at their squad and the quality of players already at the club.

However, the Red Dragons were still very much on course to beat the likes of Wycombe Wanderers and Huddersfield Town to the second automatic promotion place.

2025 has got off to a nightmare start for Wrexham, however, losing four and drawing one of their first eight league matches this year.

This has seen them slip down to third and now five points adrift of second place Wycombe.

Wrexham fans turn on Phil Parkinson after Leyton Orient

Their latest outing saw Wrexham beaten 2-1 by Leyton Orient, meaning they have now lost back-to-back home games for the first time under their current manager.

Phil Parkinson received criticism from fans after Tuesday’s loss which was arguably the worst showing we have seen from the Welsh outfit this term, at least in the second half.

While promotion is still on, some supporters have begun to turn on the manager and even called for him to leave.

One fan wrote: “Unless Parkinson is tendering his resignation, I’ve no interest in anything he has to say.”

And another added: “Thank you Parkinson for what you have done for us getting two promotions. But maybe a third is a step too far as luck has left us and nothing has changed on the field.”

What Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney said about sacking Phil Parkinson

This is not the first time fans have turned on Parkinson during his three-plus years in the Wrexham dugout.

During his first season at the club, the then National League side got their 2021/22 season off to a very slow start.

Fans were beginning to question Parkinson and owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds even discussed his future.

Their conversation was documented in Season 1 Episode 11 of the ‘Welcome to Wrexham‘ series.

However, while results were poor at the time, both Rob and Ryan were against sacking Parkinson.

Reynolds said on the topic: “First off it was a coup that we even got him. You let him go seven months later, I think it’s just a bad look. I think you can’t do business like that, you can’t work with people like that.”

McElhenney added: “I don’t mind giving him time, the problem is he’s asking for a significant amount of money for the January transfer window.

“The decision we have to make is whether or not, not only do we keep him, ok that’s one thing, give him a full season, fine. But we’re essentially doubling down not only for this season but next season because the players we sign, it’ll be two to three-year contracts.”

Phil Parkinson Wrexham contract explained

While a lot has changed since his first season in charge, it does seem unlikely Rob and Ryan will be looking to sack Parkinson after a rough couple of months.

The duo wanted to give him time back in 2021 and Parkinson’s contract at Wrexham means they should probably give him until the end of the season anyway.

The former Bolton Wanderers boss is on a slightly unusual deal as rather than signing a multi-year contract, he is on a rolling deal that renews every 12 months if both sides agree to it.

In turn, given Wrexham weren’t expected to even be in the top-two promotion race this term anyway, it’s probably wise to at least give Parkinson until the end of the season before deciding his future.
