Wrexham defender Eoghan O’Connell has now left the club, having been left out of Phil Parkinson’s squad for the Championship season.

Monday brought the curtain down on Wrexham’s incredible summer transfer window.

13 new signings joined Wrexham over the summer as Phil Parkinson revamped his squad at the STōK Cae Ras.

Just because the summer transfer window is over, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the deals end there.

Wrexham signed goalkeeper Reuben Egan on Wednesday, bringing the Irish stopper to North Wales on a free transfer.

Wrexham have now confirmed the departure of Eoghan O’Connell, terminating the defender’s contract by mutual consent.

Parkinson named Wrexham’s Championship squad earlier on Thursday, and defender O’Connell was a notable absentee.

The Irishman was left out and has now left Wrexham to pursue opportunities away from the STōK Cae Ras.

Wrexham have mutually agreed to terminate O’Connell’s contract, just like Ollie Palmer and George Evans in recent days.

O’Connell joined Wrexham from Charlton Athletic in January 2023 and played a key role in three straight promotions.

The Irishman departs with more than 80 league appearances to his name and leaves having made a big impact in a Wrexham shirt.

Phil Parkinson explains Eoghan O’Connell exit

O’Connell was a key player in League One last season, but Conor Coady’s arrival meant the Irishman slipped down the pecking order.

The defender is now free to pursue a move elsewhere, and may have officially been released before the transfer deadline.

That would mean O’Connell can immediately join and play for another club, rather than waiting until January.

Parkinson has now told Wrexham’s official website that O’Connell almost left Wrexham for another club on deadline day, but the deal fell through.

Parkinson thanked O’Connell for his efforts at Wrexham and wished him well as he looks for a new club.

“I’d like to thank Eoghan for his contributions over the last two-and-a-half years, playing a part in all three of our promotions,” said Parkinson.

“We thought he had a move prior to the transfer window closing, but it didn’t materialise in time, and Eoghan has decided to part ways so he can look for the next challenge in his career. We all wish him well,” he added.

O’Connell was touted as Wrexham Player of the Season by Humphrey Ker last term, but now departs Wrexham after a busy summer of incomings.
