Wrexham’s story under Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds has been nothing short of remarkable and others now want a slice of the pie.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have been the driving force behind Wrexham going from the National League to League One in the space of three seasons.

The Reds achieved successive promotions under the stewardship of Phil Parkinson and are dreaming of a third.

Currently, they sit top of League One after six matches and despite losing against Birmingham City on Monday night, have made a fantastic start to the season.

Reynolds and McElhenney’s success in Wales has seen them join an investment group that owns stakes in Mexican football side Necaxa and the Alpine Formula 1 team but there is another sport they’d like to add to their portfolio.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds want investment in cricket team Welsh Fire

As part of their next foray into another sport, Reynolds and McElhenney are in talks, as per Sky News, to buy shares in cricket team Welsh Fire, who partake in the Hundred, a hundred-ball cricket tournament which was first launched in 2021.

Earlier this month, the England and Wales Cricket Board opened the process to secure private investment into The Hundred ahead of the fifth edition of the tournament in 2025.

This has opened the opportunity for Wrexham’s Hollywood owners to purchase a 49% investment in Welsh Fire, with the county hoping they could “grow the brand globally” as they have done with Wrexham.

Chief Executive of Welsh Fire, Dan Cherry, is behind the idea of McElhenney and Reynolds investing into cricket after seeing the fantastic work they’ve done to engage football fans in North Wales.

“We’re really proud of our Welsh heritage,” Cherry said. “And we’ve seen the fantastic work that Ryan and Rob have done in engaging football fans in North Wales and building that brand globally.

“We’re open minded about potential investment into Welsh Fire at the moment, and if Ryan and Rob are interested in having further conversations then it’s obviously an exciting proposition for us.”

What further investment means for Wrexham

McElhenney and Reynolds priority will always be ensuring Wrexham are building a sustainable business model, as showcased by their transfer dealings this summer.

But, their ambition knows no bounds and they believe any business venture they turn their hands to can become a success.

For Wrexham, it can only be positive that their Hollywood owners are targeting investment elsewhere as this gives the work they’ve done in Wales further recognition.

People will see how they’ve transformed the Reds from a side stuck in the National League to one fighting for promotion to the Championship.

This incredible turnaround just shows what is made possible when owners have a clear ambition of how they see a club evolving, an ambition they’re spreading across to other sports.
