Wrexham are gearing up for their pre-season tour to Australia as the players return from their summer breaks.

Phil Parkinson has already strengthened his Wrexham squad with the acquisitions of Ryan Hardie and Danny Ward.

Further signings are expected, however Parkinson wants to keep a winning momentum at the club and therefore will not completely dismantle the core of his Wrexham team.

One of those key players is captain James McClean and he has opened up on his spell at the Racecourse Ground in glowing terms.

James McClean feels he is ‘appreciated’ at Wrexham

Speaking on the latest episode of the ‘Talking Derry City – Everywhere we go’ podcast, McClean has opened up on his spell with the Red Dragons.

The skipper joined the Red Dragons in the summer of 2023 ahead of their first campaign back in the Football League and has been an integral part of Parkinson’s side since.

McClean stated: “It’s class. I’ve found a place where I’m appreciated and people have a lot of respect for me and that’s the case.

“Obviously, you’ll go above and beyond to repay that anyways, but it’s given me a new lease of life. I’m enjoying football and I feel like I can do this for a long time yet.”

McClean has praised Wrexham’s owners and also believes that the club are very capable of doing the ‘unthinkable’ and earning a fourth successive promotion.

James McClean’s role at Wrexham even more significant in the Championship

There is no doubt that the Championship will be a huge step up in quality, however, McClean has backed Wrexham to compete well in the division.

His experience alongside the likes of Matty James and Jay Rodriguez will be key to the side, especially if results do take a turn for the worse at spells during the campaign.

McClean has returned to Wrexham’s pre-season training as fit as ever and ready to continue his efforts for the team.

Wrexham are interested in Owen Beck and should the Liverpool youngster arrive in North Wales, McClean will have some competition for his place but a player he can mentor and guide through the journey.
