Wrexham transfer exit mooted as rising star named as ‘victim’ of rapid rise under Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac

Wrexham have enjoyed tremendous success under Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, but it could come at the expense of one player.

Since Rob Mac decided to buy a football club over five years ago, Wrexham have been completely transformed.

They had spent over a decade in the National League and were hampered by previously poor ownership.

However, Ryan Reynolds and Rob have invested heavily in the club on the pitch and behind the scenes.

It now means that Wrexham have won three successive promotions and, after a 15-year stint in non-league, are now going to compete in the Championship for the first time.

While it’s an amazing achievement, their rapid rise has had an impact on some players.

Loan for Wrexham player Harry Ashfield mooted

Wrexham let eight players go in May ahead of their contracts expiring.

These included previously important players such as Steven Fletcher and Mark Howard, who are perhaps no longer good enough to compete in the second tier.

Their ascent up the EFL could also have an impact on some of the younger talent who need more minutes.

Rich Fay has been discussing a potential loan move for Harry Ashfield this summer on the Rob Ryan Red podcast and suggested the teenager is perhaps a victim of the club’s rapid rise under Reynolds and Mac.

He said: “I think in a weird way, he is almost a victim of our rapid rise, because if we were still in League Two,  you’d say what you keep him around give him some game time.

“I’d say even if we hadn’t gone up last season, maybe it’s a really easy argument to say keep him, give him some proper minutes in League One, let’s see what he’s up to.

“But the Championship we’re kind of saying now that our current squad might struggle in the Championship because the level is so much further up.

“So to bed a youngster in at that level is some doing, and that’s a lot of weight on his shoulders even if it shouldn’t be, even if he’s coming on for 10-15 minutes the end of matches it’s still you know it’s a cauldron, now that is really make or break for a player of his age.

“And it’s about nurturing that talent. I know that lots of people say, just put him in, he’ll gain some experience.”

Two more Wrexham stars could be loaned alongside Harry Ashfield

Ashfield has been playing regularly in pre-season amid Wrexham’s injury problems, but his senior experience is very limited.

He never played in League One last term, with his only outings coming in the EFL Trophy.

Alongside the Wrexham native, Sebastian Revan and Modou Faal would likely benefit from loans.

Faal is arguably at the bottom of the club’s centre-forward pecking order, while the incoming transfer for Liberato Cacace would likely see Revan’s minutes reduced even more.
