Wrexham will be praying referee vs Huddersfield Town doesn’t make another error – he’s ‘cost’ three teams already this season

Wrexham are in action this week with a trip to Huddersfield Town on the agenda, but the referee for the game could end up being the main attraction.

The Red Dragons will be looking to get another win under their belt after the disappointing stalemate against Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.

And, if Phil Parkinson’s men can get the better of Huddersfield, there’s every chance Wrexham could climb into the automatic promotion places if results elsewhere go their way.

Anyone who plans to watch Wrexham take on Huddersfield will surely be expecting to see some of the best players in League One strut their stuff at the Kirklees Stadium, but they’ll have to keep an eye on the referee, too.

Who is the referee for Huddersfield vs Wrexham?

The referee for the upcoming game will be Farai Hallam.

He will be joined by assistants Adam Nichol and Conor Brown. Meanwhile, Sebastian Stockbridge will be on fourth official duty.

Farai Hallam’s referee record in 2024/25

Farai Hallam has taken charge of 20 matches this season, with seven games in the Championship, six in League One, and seven in League Two.

Across those games, he’s handed out 64 yellow cards at an average of 3.20 per game, which is fairly low by general standards. Hallam has also only given one red card, with Luton Town’s Joe Johnson picking up two yellows in the defeat against Swansea City back in December.

Hallam has awarded two penalties this season — one for Sheffield United against Plymouth and one for Wrexham’s promotion rivals, Birmingham City, against Rotherham. However, there is reason to believe he should have given a couple more this term, but we’ll get to that soon.

On average, Hallam blows his whistle for 24.35 fouls per game, with a ratio of 0.68 fouls per tackle during his games.

Farai Hallam has made three costly mistakes already this season

It’s fair to say Farai Hallam has had a tough season, and he’s not exactly in the good books when it comes to a handful of managers in the EFL right now.

In 2025 alone, Hallam has made three mistakes that have proved costly for Portsmouth, Rotherham, and Sunderland.

First, in January, Hallam’s decision to turn down a strong penalty appeal for Portsmouth caused fury for John Mousinho, especially since Blackburn Rovers then went down the other end and scored their second goal before going on to triumph 3-0.

Mousinho said he was ‘not happy’ with Hallam’s explanation after the game (via Portsmouth News) and insisted Hallam’s decision ‘cost’ Pompey the game.

Then, Steve Evans lambasted the EFL’s decision to put Hallam in charge of his Rotherham side’s clash with Birmingham City, claiming it was too big of an occasion for the referee. Hallam awarded Birmingham a penalty in controversial circumstances which saw the Blues win the game late on.

Finally, just last week, Hallam was back in action in the second tier, and missed a blatant handball from Hull City captain Lewie Coyle in the box. The referee did not give a penalty to Sunderland there, and Hull held out to win the game 1-0, all but ending the Black Cats’ chances of automatic promotion.

Let’s just hope Farai Hallam doesn’t have Phil Parkinson raging tomorrow night.
