Wrexham progressed to the fourth round of the EFL Cup after they overcame Reading on September 23 thanks to a brace from Nathan Broadhead.

This 2-0 victory over Reading meant that Wrexham progressed to the fourth round of the EFL Cup for the first time in 48 years.

Progression in the competition has now given Wrexham the chance of playing an English giant to test themselves and to demonstrate how far they have come under the ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac.

One indication of how far they have come has been seen in the history they made for Wales in their victory over Reading in the EFL Cup.

Both Cardiff City and Swansea City also managed to reach the fourth round, as they beat Burnley and Nottingham Forest, respectively.

In the 65 previous editions of the competition, Wales has only once had more than one side in the last 16, when Swansea City and Wrexham made it that far in 1976-77.

Record of the Welsh clubs in the EFL Cup

Wrexham have never lifted the EFL Cup, with their best performance in the competition seeing them reach the quarter-final, with this coming in 1961 and 1978.

Meanwhile, Swansea City have won the EFL Cup once in their history, with this victory coming in 2013.

Cardiff City did not have the same success as Swansea in the EFL Cup, as they lost the 2012 final to Liverpool.

Newport County’s best performance in the competition saw them reach the fourth round of the EFL Cup in 2021 when they lost to Newcastle United on penalties.
