Wrexham’s promotion run-in record under Phil Parkinson analysed – the points tallies are impressive

Wrexham now have just nine games left to go as the League One promotion race enters its final sprint this weekend.

Phil Parkinson enjoyed a great result last weekend as Wrexham beat Wycombe Wanderers 1-0 away from home.

That result took Wrexham into second place – but only temporarily.

Wycombe beat Rotherham United on Tuesday night to go back into second place, ahead of Wrexham only on goal difference.

Wrexham’s run-in features tricky games against Stockport County and Charlton Athletic as well as clashes against strugglers Burton Albion and Bristol Rovers.

There are nine games to play and 27 points available, so let’s dig into how Wrexham’s last three promotion run-ins have gone.

Wrexham’s 2021-22 run-in

The first full season of the Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds project saw Wrexham miss out on promotion.

Wrexham were beaten by Grimsby Town in the National League play-offs as promotion evaded Parkinson and co.

The final nine games saw Wrexham pick up five wins, two draws and two defeats.

Wrexham were beaten on the road at Woking and Dagenham and Redbridge whilst drawing with Solihull Moors and Boreham Wood.

Wrexham beat Eastleigh, Altrincham, Weymouth, Southend United and Stockport County, racking up 17 points from a possible 27.

Automatic promotion was missed by six points; winning all nine games would have been a big ask but those dropped points ended up being crucial.

Wrexham’s 2022-23 run-in

That first season was always going to throw up some teething problems and a slow start ultimately cost Wrexham in the end.

The 2022-23 season was much better and 111 points would have been enough to romp home in pretty much any National League season.

Notts County were just so good that those final nine games really were a run-in and Wrexham had to be right at it.

Wrexham lost just once in the final nine games of the 2022-23 season, falling to a 3-1 defeat at Halifax Town.

The only other dropped points were at Barnet and Torquay United, though promotion had already been secured before the latter.

Wins over Bromley, York City, Oldham Athletic, Notts County, Yeovil Town and Boreham Wood saw Wrexham rack up 20 points from a possible 27, securing promotion.

Wrexham’s 2023-24 run-in

Wrexham lost twice in the final nine games last season, falling at home to Tranmere Rovers before a defeat at Doncaster Rovers.

The other seven games in that run were victories though as Wrexham managed to win seven of the final nine, accumulating 21 points from 27.

That was enough for automatic promotion as Wrexham took second place after wins over Grimsby Town, Mansfield Town, Colchester United, Crawley Town, Forest Green Rovers, Crewe Alexandra and Stockporty County.

Wrexham were up after beating Forest Green Rovers but still saw out the season with two wins.

The point tallies have actually increased over the final nine games over the years, from 17 to 20 and then 21.

Parkinson will hope to build on that progression this year and secure another promotion, with the Wrexham boss continuing to prove that he can pick up the results needed in the final weeks of the season.
