There’s no such thing as an international break in League One, which is good news for Wrexham and Wycombe Wanderers fans, who surely can’t wait to dive into the final nine fixtures in this thrilling promotion race.
It’s been a rollercoaster ride up at the top in League One all season. While Birmingham City have basically got the title wrapped up now, Wrexham and Wycombe are fighting it out for that second spot.
Phil Parkinson’s men taught Wycombe a ‘brutal’ lesson last weekend with a narrow 1-0 win to leapfrog the Chairboys. But, Mike Dodds’ side edged a tense 3-2 win over Rotherham United in midweek to return to the automatic promotion places.
With both teams having played 37 games now, only goal difference separates the Red Dragons and their promotion rivals. So, it’s time to look ahead to what’s still to come for the two sides in the final run-in.

The final nine games for Wrexham and Wycombe Wanderers
Just a few weeks ago, after defeats to Shrewsbury, Stevenage, and Leyton Orient, Wrexham’s hopes of automatic promotion looked to be dead and buried.
However, Wycombe have dropped their fair share of points, too, drawing with the likes of Northampton, Cambridge United, and Crawley, plus defeats to Huddersfield and Birmingham.
That win at Adams Park has well and truly ignited Wrexham’s promotion hopes once more. It seems the fans believe, and so do the players and the coaches. But, it’s all down to the next nine games and getting the results they need now.
| Game | Wrexham | Wycombe |
| 38 | Stockport County (H) – 22/03/25 | Lincoln City (H) – 29/03/25 |
| 39 | Exeter City (A) – 29/03/25 | Shrewsbury (H) – 01/04/25 |
| 40 | Cambridge United (A) – 01/04/25 | Reading (A) – 05/04/25 |
| 41 | Burton Albion (H) – 05/04/25 | Huddersfield (A) – 08/04/25 |
| 42 | Wigan Athletic (A) – 12/04/25 | Stevenage (H) – 12/04/25 |
| 43 | Bristol Rovers (H) – 18/04/25 | Bolton (A) – 18/04/25 |
| 44 | Blackpool (A) – 21/04/25 | Charlton (H) – 21/04/25 |
| 45 | Charlton (H) – 26/04/25 | Leyton Orient (A) – 26/04/25 |
| 46 | Lincoln City (A) – 03/05/25 | Stockport County (H) – 03/05/25 |
One potentially big advantage for Wrexham is that they will be a game ahead for the next four weeks, with Wycombe sitting out the fixtures this coming weekend.
If Wrexham can put a run together, that will surely get in Wycombe’s head and could lead to the Chairboys collapsing under the pressure at the crucial time.
However, while Wrexham fans fear past losses will come back to bite them down the line, there is another factor to consider here, and it’s those last four games that Wycombe have at the end of the season.
Dodds’ team will have to face promotion hopefuls Bolton, Charlton, Leyton Orient, and Stockport, with potential slip-ups threatening to derail their season entirely in that little period.
Indeed, Charlton are looking like the team to fear at the moment, and the Addicks could have a massive say on the promotion race in April. If either of Wrexham or Wycombe can beat Nathan Jones’ side, they’ll have a great chance of going up, but if both were to lose, we could yet see Charlton sneak into second place.
Wycombe also have tough tests against Huddersfield and Reading in the coming weeks, while Wrexham could and should be putting away teams like Burton, Cambridge, and Wigan in the near future.
Advantage Wrexham, then? Only time will tell.

Wrexham have the easier run-in, but it’s all in Wycombe’s hands thanks to goals
With goal difference the only thing separating Wycombe and Wrexham right now, it really would be cruel if the Red Dragons’ failings in front of goal were the thing that holds them back come the end of the season.
While the likes of Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer, and indeed most of the Wrexham strikers, have struggled to contribute in attacking areas this season, Wycombe have been the top-scorers in the division, largely thanks to Richard Kone.
| Pos | Team | Played | W | D | L | GF | GA | GD | Pts |
| 1 | Birmingham City | 36 | 25 | 8 | 3 | 59 | 24 | 35 | 83 |
| 2 | Wycombe Wanderers | 37 | 20 | 11 | 6 | 64 | 36 | 28 | 71 |
| 3 | Wrexham | 37 | 21 | 8 | 8 | 51 | 30 | 21 | 71 |
| 4 | Charlton Athletic | 37 | 19 | 9 | 9 | 49 | 32 | 17 | 66 |
| 5 | Stockport County | 37 | 18 | 11 | 8 | 53 | 34 | 19 | 65 |
| 6 | Huddersfield Town | 37 | 18 | 7 | 12 | 52 | 34 | 18 | 61 |
It is very likely his 19-goal haul (and counting) could be the key for Wycombe. We expect both teams to suffer a slip-up somewhere along the way in these next nine games, and it is not unthinkable that we will have a final league table where Wrexham and Wycombe have the same amount of points.
Wrexham simply have to use the momentum generated from that win over Wycombe as the catalyst in the run-in, and dig deep into that spirit and resilience they have shown in seasons gone by. The Championship beckons for one of these teams, while the play-offs will be waiting for the other.
