Despite brilliant start, one of Wrexham’s new signings could now be dropped by Phil Parkinson

Wrexham’s first-team squad is as promising as it’s ever been. So much so that some quality players may now find themselves on the bench.

We’ve seen it quite a few times this year now, how Wrexham players quickly fall out of contention during this unprecedented rise up the Football League pyramid.

Paul Mullin is the best example. There are more potentially similar cases brewing too, with names like Eoghan O’Connell and Elliot Lee still with the club, but unable to get into the team.

And after Wrexham signed three new players on deadline day, taking their summer signing tally up to an incredible 13 with £40million spent, Phil Parkinson could have some more tough decisions lying ahead.

Particularly in defence, at centre-back, Parkinson now has some very good options at his disposal, with Dom Hyam joining from Championship rivals Blackburn Rovers on deadline day.

Wrexham sign Dom Hyam on deadline day

Deadline day looked as though it would be solely focussed around Ben Sheaf. Wrexham managed to sign Sheaf from Coventry City in an impressive £6.5million deal, but Parkinson’s side surprised everyone by then doing two more deals before the window slammed shut at 7pm.

Hyam joined Wrexham in a £2.7million deal from Blackburn Rovers and Man City right-back Issa Kabore also joined on loan for the remainder of the season.

The 27-year-old Hyam is vastly experienced at Championship level, and it’s another signing that might really go under the radar at Wrexham this season, with all the spotlight on names like Nathan Broadhead who cost Wrexham club record £10million.

Conor Coady could be set for Wrexham axe after Dom Hyam arrives

Hyam is simply too good to be on the bench. His Championship experience and pedigree surely means he’s a starter, and if Parkinson feels that way then it’s surely Conor Coady who makes way.

Coady has been impressive for Wrexham since his move from Leicester City. But at 32 years old, he’s not exactly a long-term option for Wrexham, whereas the 29-year-old Dom Hyam could be.

Coady has also struggled with injuries in the past and so Parkinson may not want to overplay the former Liverpool man.

Then there’s the likes of Max Cleworth and Doyle either side of the middle centre-back position. Both are definitely long-term assets for the club and so expect Parkinson to want to keep both of them in defence.

It might be that Hyam comes in and replaces Cleworth, or Hyam and Coady swap the position a lot. But Hyam surely hasn’t signed to come and sit on the bench, and Parkinson surely hasn’t signed him to do that either.
