Forget Smith… Wrexham can send clear message to promotion rivals by signing ‘intelligent’ striker

Wrexham have made a fantastic start on their return to League One and signing a quality striker could take them to the next level.

Wrexham sit in fourth position in the third tier, recording seven points from a possible nine and only dropping points against Bolton Wanderers.

Most of their seven signings have acclimatized to life at the Racecourse Ground well, as Arthur Okonkwo, Sebastian Revan and George Dobson have all flourished.

But Phil Parkinson could add to that total of incomings in the closing stages of the transfer window, with Wrexham in the market for a striker.

Wrexham’s current striker targets

The Welsh outfit have been eyeing up a new centre-forward to partner Paul Mullin and hand them a reliable source of goals upfront.

Wrexham was reportedly the ‘most likely destination’ for Sheffield Wednesday striker Michael Smith, who could leave Hillsborough this summer.

Smith is entering the final year of his contract and was left out of the Wednesday squad that beat Grimsby 5-1 in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

That latest update has made signing the 32-year-old possible but perhaps surprisingly, Preston North End forward Will Keane has emerged on Wrexham’s radar.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds could send a clear message to their promotion rivals by landing a striker of Keane’s calibre.

Wrexham can send clear statement of intent by signing Will Keane

Keane is an accomplished Championship striker, hitting double figures for Preston last term with 13 and scoring 12 for a Wigan Athletic side who were relegated the season before.

The Manchester United academy graduate also boasts an incredible record in the third tier, firing Wigan to promotion to the second tier in 2021/22 with 26 goals in 44 league appearances.

Such form resulted in a call-up to the Republic of Ireland national team, where former manager Stephen Kenny described the 31-year-old as ‘intelligent’.

Keane was a late bloomer in professional football, as he didn’t start to find his feet till he was around 25 during a loan spell at Ipswich, but now he’s 31 and has been around the block, he’s the exact type of striker who could fire Wrexham to promotion.

Not only is he clinical in front of goal but given he’s 6 foot 2 and commands a physical presence, those attributes make him the perfect partner for Mullin.

With his contract expiring in 2025, Preston could be looking to cash in on the Irishman and if Wrexham do break their transfer record to sign him, they would be sending a clear message to their promotion rivals.
