Four considerations Wrexham need to address before thinking of replacing Phil Parkinson with Steven Gerrard

Steven Gerrard had been tipped to make a return to Rangers as manager after the Scottish club took the decision to bring the curtain down on the Russell Martin era.

The Liverpool legend opted not to make a return to the club where he had great success as a manager; however, he did leave the door open for a potential return in the future should the conditions be right.

There has been some interest in what the next destination for the former England international will be.

Now there are reports in the Sun suggesting that Wrexham would be interested in replacing Phil Parkinson with Steven Gerrard.

The timing of these rumours appears strange; while the Red Dragons boss had previously been under pressure due to a slow start in their Championship campaign, a defiant message from Parkinson and a current unbeaten run of four league matches had seemingly removed any lingering links to other individuals for this role beginning with a win over Norwich City.

Should Wrexham opt to make a move for Gerrard, it would be the wrong decision from the club for several reasons.

Lack of Championship experience

While Phil Parkinson’s Championship experience before this season was not the most glittering, particularly due to the cards he was dealt, he has plenty of EFL experience, something that Gerrard completely lacks.

The second tier of English football is unrelenting and the current Wrexham boss has demonstrated that he was able to withstand the early pressure on him this campaign and managed to turn their form around.

Parkinson has seemingly found a successful formula for his team at present, with the club currently on a four-game unbeaten run, while Wrexham currently have a worrying stat of throwing away points from winning positions; it appears he will solve this soon.

The timing of this decision does not make sense

The environment around Wrexham on and off the pitch appears to be a happy one, as they have started to discover form in the division.

While there has been an argument that should a better manager become available that could improve a club and a team, then it makes sense to go after them; however, Gerrard is not that man.

There are several warnings in the Championship, like when Birmingham City appointed Gianfranco Zola or when the Blues appointed Wayne Rooney, completely derailing their season, as they wished to have a flashier name in charge of the club.

Wrexham should learn from these experiences and avoid appointing Gerrard if this is their aim.

Phil Parkinson deserves a fair chance in the Championship

The current Wrexham boss has been crucial to the club’s rise through the divisions in the English pyramid and has brought the Red Dragons incredible success.

Parkinson has shown he is able to deliver results in the Championship this season, which is exactly what the club needs, as the first aim of this campaign is to survive for next season in this division at a minimum, and he can deliver that.

There are so many unknowns around Gerrard, and one of those is can he deliver the results to keep the Welsh club in the division?

Steven Gerrard is still an unknown quantity as a manager

While the former England international did deliver a Scottish title to Rangers, this feels more like an exception to the norm during his time as a football manager.

It is no easy feat to manage that, particularly on the blue side of Glasgow at present; however, his spell in England with Aston Villa was nothing to write home about, particularly when his replacement, Unai Emery, has been able to take the same squad to the Champions League.

Meanwhile, his time in Saudi Arabia cannot be considered a success in footballing terms, as Al-Ettifaq were nearly always in the bottom half of the league under his guidance.

The Saudi club backed Gerrard, and yet he could not deliver the results they were hoping he would bring, and so they parted ways.

On his career to this point, what evidence is there to suggest he would be a success and do a better job than Phil Parkinson?
