‘Incredible’ Wrexham star should now be fearing for his own future after Ollie Palmer contract extension

One Wrexham ace may no longer have a future at the club thanks to Ollie Palmer’s recent contract extension.

There has been much talk regarding the contract situation of several Wrexham players over the last few weeks.

In a big boost for the club and their quest to secure a place in the Championship, Wrexham triggered a Ryan Barnett contract extension that will keep him at the Racecourse Ground until 2026.

The right-back has been a standout performer for Phil Parkinson’s side this term and securing his services for another year is a big boost.

However, the future of many of the club’s other senior players was and still is in doubt as we prepare for club football to return.

Jack Marriott, James Jones, Jacob Mendy, Anthony Forde, Steven Fletcher and Mark Howard are all in the final 12 months of their contracts.

Ollie Palmer was also set to leave the Red Dragons on a free next year but it was confirmed on Tuesday evening that the striker has put pen to paper on a fresh contract.

Ollie Palmer Wrexham contract extension is bad news for Jack Marriott

Palmer is a long-time servant of the club and has been crucial to Wrexham jumping up two divisions in two seasons.

However, the fact the 32-year-old is set to remain at the club beyond 2024/25 may be very bad news for Marriott.

Marriott endured a rough debut campaign in Wales, scoring just one in his first 17 outings last season.

He has found form this term though, with Wrexham fans labelling Marriott ‘incredible’ after his showing against Northampton Town earlier this month.

But the 30-year-old’s deal is due to expire at the end of 2024/25 and it is now hard to see him being offered a fresh one.

Paul Mullin and Palmer are Parkinson’s preferred striking duo and record-signing Modou Faal will also be given a run in the first-team going forward.

This means Marriott is likely to be a fourth-choice striker at best if he stays at Wrexham beyond the current season.

And given Wrexham are keen to win promotion to the Championship, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney will probably want to bring in a higher quality centre-forward in the upcoming transfer windows, rather than signing Marriott to a new contract.

How Wrexham players reacted to Ollie Palmer contract extension

Wrexham confirmed the news of Palmer’s contract extension via Instagram on October 15th.

Several of the club’s players then took to the comment section of the post to react to the news.

His striking partner Mullin wrote ‘There we land’, followed by a plane and handshake emoji.

Andy Cannon then added ‘Elon fuming you’ve just shut down Twitter apparently with the news’.

Marriott also reacted to the deal getting over the line with a love-heart-eyes and fire emoji.
