Wrexham produced another late comeback to earn their place in the third round draw of the Carabao Cup.

Phil Parkinson’s side can now start dreaming of a glamour Premier League side after a late winner from Kieffer Moore gave the Red Dragons a 3-2 win at Deepdale.

Preston were far superior in the first half and had it not been for a moment of brilliance from Ryan Hardie, the hosts may well have been in a much more dominant position.

However, Wrexham improved in the second half but one player’s performance has surely written him out of contention for the upcoming Championship clash with Millwall.

Eoghan O’Connell struggles for Wrexham against Preston North End

Eoghan O’Connell would have been hoping to continue his excellent form from the League One promotion campaign into the new season with Wrexham.

However, the defender has seen himself fall down the pecking order following the arrivals of Conor Coady and Callum Doyle.

The Carabao Cup has been the only chance of first-team football for the 30-year-old so far this season and he did not help his case for forcing his way back into Parkinson’s league side.

O’Connell looked nervy on the ball, struggled to cope with the pace and trickery of Preston’s front two and lost his marker Liam Lindsay for Preston’s second goal from a set-piece.

He improved slightly in the second half, however, Parkinson would have noted his struggles in the first period and won’t risk the defender against Millwall.

Sometimes statistics do not tell the full story of a match or a player’s performance, but there is no hiding for O’Connell in his display against Preston.

The defender lost the ball in dangerous areas for his side on numerous occasions and was beaten for pace in the channels far too easily.

Ryan Reynolds is a big fan of O’Connell and whilst his form is not where it needs to be right now, it is unlikely that the 30-year-old will be sold before the end of the transfer window.

His experience could yet prove invaluable this season, however, he will need to improve his performance the next time he gets a chance to impress.
