One Wrexham star who has hit the heights and ‘Rolls Royce’ who has struggled under Phil Parkinson

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson will have already made up his mind on two players in particular after the start to the season, including one blockbuster signing.

The Red Dragons have struggled so far in the Championship and find themselves with just one point in their opening three games.

Wrexham have seen success in the EFL Cup, having reached the third round after a 3-2 victory away at Preston North End on Tuesday evening, but the priority lies within the league for Phil Parkinson, and he will know that there is plenty to work on.

There is no doubt that Wrexham boss Parkinson has received backing from Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac in the summer transfer window, and whilst some new arrivals are yet to kick on, he will be delighted over how one £4m star has performed so far.

Phil Parkinson will be delighted with Lewis O’Brien’s start at Wrexham

Out of the many Wrexham signings, not many arrived with such high expectations on their shoulders as Lewis O’Brien after the pedigree he has previously shown at Championship level.

O’Brien joined on a permanent deal from Nottingham Forest this summer, and has already hit the heights needed for Wrexham, having done a brilliant job in controlling the midfield, an area that the Red Dragons desperately needed an experienced player with his quality.

His ability to dictate a game has been on show, and he has been able to help fashion several chances for Wrexham on the front foot.

He already has a goal to his name after notching a brilliant finish in the 3-2 defeat against West Brom at home.

The former Nottingham Forest man has also made an impact on Wrexham teammate George Dobson, as the fellow midfielder said: “He’s a top quality player.

“You can tell why he’s played at a high level and the way he manoeuvres the ball in tight positions.

“His athleticism of being able to cover such high distances – it’s something for me to look at and help improve my game.

“I’m really enjoying playing alongside him and long may it continue.”

Phil Parkinson will want to see more from Lewis Brunt in the Championship

It is difficult to hand a negative verdict to a Wrexham player who was not brought in as a Championship-proven star, but still, Phil Parkinson will be hoping that Lewis Brunt can acclimatise to the second tier soon.

Brunt has looked somewhat out of depth at times in the Championship, despite proving to be a ‘Rolls-Royce’ of a defender last season for Wrexham.

The first game against Southampton saw him targeted by the Saints’ quality in the final third, whilst the defeat against West Brom showed a number of weaknesses to surface.

Brunt was fairly isolated against the Baggies as, via SofaScore, he was unable to make a single tackle, whilst he was also dribbled past on one occasion. He also lost possession nine times and picked up a yellow card just 27 minutes into the contest.

Parkinson is aware of the potential that Brunt possesses, and he will surely be confident that the centre-back can get past this minor blip at the start of the season.
