Wrexham and Welsh rival Swansea City are going head-to-head in the race to sign an exciting MLS talent before the September 1st transfer deadline.

The summer transfer window is soon to close and should Phil Parkinson’s Wrexham not do any more business, then it will go down as a very exciting summer transfer window.

It is by far the club’s most lucrative and active summer transfer in history. Wrexham have spent more than £30m on new players after completing an £8m deal to sign Callum Doyle last week.

Doyle impressed on his Wrexham debut during the 3-2 win over Preston in the Carabao Cup earlier this week.

But after a winless start to the Championship, with Wrexham having lost twice and drawn once in their opening three games, Parkinson looks set to dip into the transfer market one or two more times.

Speaking earlier in the month, Parkinson said Wrexham are working on transfers, with players looking set to arrive and set to leave the Racecourse too.

Wrexham fall behind Swansea City in race to sign Sunusi Ibrahim

At the start of summer, Sunusi Ibrahim was linked with a move to North Wales. It was claimed at the time that Wrexham were leading the race to sign Ibrahim from CF Montreal. The Nigerian-born attacker joined Montreal in 2021 and has since made 104 appearances for the club with 20 goals.

In the 2024 MLS campaign, Ibrahim scored six in 26 but is goalless in nine outings so far in 2025. Despite that, Wrexham and Welsh rivals Swansea City appear to be making a move for the 22-year-old, but it is Swansea City who have the lead.

Journalist Pete O’Rourke revealed on X that Swansea are now ahead of Wrexham in the race to sign Ibrahim, who has told Montreal that he wants to leave for a Championship club.

Sunusi Ibrahim tipped for bright future

Ibrahim didn’t blow the MLS away last season with his goals and he certainly made a poor start this time round and when he was first linked, Wrexham fans said they didn’t want Ibrahim to sign despite him being available for a relatively cheap £370,000 fee per reports.

Nonetheless, Wrexham and Swansea seemed to be keen on signing the striker ahead of transfer deadline day and the striker has already been tipped for a big future.

His Nigerian ally Taiwo Awoniyi previously backed Ibrahim for a bright future in football, saying: “I will just encourage him to pray and keep working hard and soon everything will fall into place for him at the right time, I think he is a great talent for the country.”

For Wrexham, it could be an exciting signing albeit a risky one given how he’s been in poor form this season and how he’s untested in England. Still, it’s another ode to Wrexham’s ambitions in this summer’s transfer window.
